Oh John McCain, what happened to the Straight Talk Express?

McCain for 08' people. Although he did get stumped there I admit... but it won't stop me from working on his campaign...

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”

Quoted for lolz.

Not that it was ever much on the Straight Talk to begin with, but I'd like to share this little bit of conversation that shows what happens when you don't actually know what you stand for (http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/03/16/mccain-stumbles-on-hiv-prevention/) anymore.

Set aside for a moment the fact that he can't tell you off the top of his head whether or not he supports abstinence-only sex-education in the US, which seems a bit ridiculous to me--he wasn't asked a question about long-term monetary policy, for crying out loud. It's the fact that he's sure he's taken a position on it in the past and is more worried about contradicting that position (thus opening himself up to the dreaded "flipflopper" charge) than he is about just giving the straight talk that's informative to me.

On the plus side from my point of view--a year ago, I was worried that McCain would get the nomination in 2008 and that he would be tough to beat in the general. I'm far less worried about that now.

McCain can go fuck an AIDS patient for all I care. He's way too socially conservative for me. I respect the fact that he served in Vietnam, but I don't respect his anti abortion position and I certainly don't respect the fact that he doesn't even know his own official position on contraception and sex education.

Ba-dum-bum-chich!

I wouldn't have voted for him in the first place - he's not a moderate, unless you consider not supporting state sponsered torture a 'moderate' position - and this just gives me more reason to hate the guy. He's both an idiot and a coward. I mean first he can't remember his official stance (so he fellates the president's)... but I don't believe for a second he doesn't understand or have some opinion on this subject. He just didn't want to say something that might be true but politically inexpedient. Political hack.

Have you ever heard Lewis Black about the "Dead President" in his Carnegie Hall performance? It's hilarious. He says we should elect Reagan's corpse. Because really, whose gonna screw with a country of people nuts enough to elect a dead body as their leader?

We all have moments of temporary insanity. The point is that now you know better. I actually thought he might be actually a decent guy (for a Republican) but when he started sucking up to Jerry Falwell it was hard to have any respect for him.

Both good questions.

I'm pretty much ignoring the whole thing...I already plan to vote for any third party on the ballot. I don't care if I'm throwing my vote away, the Republicans and Democrats have to shape waaaay the fuck up before I'll vote for either again.
