The Danger of National Anthems...

I like to watch sports. As is usual for international competitions one gets to hear national anthems.
Now...my problem is that I am a inveterate whistler.
So...I pick up tunes and unconsciously whistle them. My favorite is the Italian anthem...followed by the French.
Why the danger? My landlord is Sicilian...
Ah, I see your problem. Well, I sometimes have to rein in the habit of hmming the Internationale myself given my predominantly right wing area (though I doubt many would recognize it anyway).

Why would a Sicilian have a problem with the italian anthem? Is he a sort of sicilian independentist, like Salvatore Giuliano the bandit?

I enjoy whistling Dixie. I think it has a good tune.

I don't usually end up with 'God Save the Queen' stuck in my head, but 'Swing Low', 'Jerusalem' 'Rule Britannia' and the Great Escape' seem to hang about in my head after international sporting occasions. 'Nessun Dorma' almost drove me insane.

Yeah....Nessun Dorma...the most annoying tune for a sporting event ever...well that or Swing Low...
No danger of anyone whistling God Save the Queen…

still when Wembley rang out to that during footy matches it must be quite demoralising to the oppo players...

Ouch...that does not bode well to your international whistling career!

You could always whistle the Russian national anthem. Or even sing it. Most people dont even recognize the tune.
On the plus side, its a damn good national anthem, even if it doesnt translate well :P
Hell, the only Russian song people really recognize (in general, of course) is Kalinka, and only then because theres a 'HEY!' in it. >_>

I like Soviet military marches the best, especially the ones used in the October Revolution military parades on Red Square.
Like that Leningrad Cowboys and the Red Army Band gig?
That was pretty wild...:p

Indeed. Nothing beats 'Happy Together' sung with a Russian accent ;)
I once had the Soviet National Anthem stuck in my head...does that make me a Communist?

They chucked you out without even attempting to sell you a paper or sign you up to the Trot cause? They must have been having an off day. And chucking people out for singing the Internationale = new low for Trots.

It must make you feel patriotic...it seems like EVERYBODY sings their throats hoarse at the national anthem, being anywhere with tens of thousands of people all singing the same song (whatever it is) makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Patriotic...yeah I guess so. Some however do cross the boundary into rabid nationalism as witnessed both in Germany (the 5 - 1 win) and the notorious Eire game.
Try humming the Israeli national anthem. At a whisper volume, it becomes sublime.

Damn You ALL!
Now I have Advance Australia Fair running through my head. It's a pretty tune, but I hardly need to be thinking about it for the next few hours...and it's not even MY anthem!
