Oh, come on, people. Obviously what's affecting them is the placebo effect. Given how sad conditions there are and how much they were suffering, let them believe it for now. If it helps make them feel better for the moment than we should let it continue while we figure out a way to improve their condition so they don't have to keep doing it.

BANJUL, Gambia (CNN) -- At the only hospital in the capital of this tiny West African nation, a 3-year-old AIDS patient named Suleiman receives his daily dose of medication -- a murky brown concoction of seven herbs and spices served out of a bottle that once contained pancake syrup.

Is this guy from KFC, or something?

The problem is it is damaging people. They are using this nonsense instead of getting real treatment. The government still hasn't acknowledged that HIV causes AIDS. The New Yorker did a wonderful (yet scary) story about AIDS denial in that country.

There is antiretroviral medication that does treat HIV/AIDS. Their government refuses to acknowledge it's effectiveness.

My point was that at the moment we CAN'T get them the real help they need and that we need to work on getting them that help, and if this is the only way to keep them alive till they get it then so be it. Call it a case of just accepting reality and trying to work with it rather than being idealistic as I see most people being with things such as this.

That was the sad thing about this article. They could get the help they needed if the government would just acknowledge that the drugs didn't "cause more harm than good." I'll see if I can find a link to the article. From their website I can only get the abstract.

You might want to re-read the article. There are anti-retrovirals available, people are already taking them. The very obvious fear is that people stop taking them and instead rely solely on the miracle syrup. Which, unless this stuff really does cure AIDS, in which case I'd wager they'd have allowed it to be scientifically tested, does damage the patients very much indeed.

...wait, what? Damn it, this is why I definitely need more reading comprehension.

Okay, in that case, screw the placebo: let's get the real drugs in there stat!

They need herbs, spices and pancake syrup to cure AIDS over there?

Pfft. Blue Peter showed us how to cure AIDS with just an empty washing-up liquid bottle, a toilet-roll tube and some sticky-backed plastic months ago.

Because it has to be *pancake* syrup, not just any syrup.
