WASHINGTON - Scientists have discovered that the clouded leopard found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra is an entirely new species of cat. The secretive rainforest animal was originally thought to be the same species as the one found in mainland Southeast Asia.

Genetic analysis conducted at the U.S. National Cancer Institute shows that the difference between the two clouded leopard species is comparable to the differences between other large cat species like lions, tigers, and jaguars. Scientists believe the new species of clouded leopard diverged from the mainland population some 1.4 million years ago.

“Genetic research results clearly indicate that the clouded leopards of Borneo and Sumatra should be considered a separate species,” said Dr Stephen O'Brien, Head of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, U.S. National Cancer Institute. “DNA tests highlighted around 40 differences between the two species.”

“The moment we started comparing the skins of the mainland clouded leopard and the leopard found on Borneo and Sumatra, it was clear we were comparing two different species,” said Dr Andrew Kitchener, from the Department of Natural Sciences, National Museums Scotland and lead author of the scientific paper that described the new species. “It’s incredible that no one has ever noticed these differences.”

The new clouded leopard species is generally darker than the mainland species, has small cloud markings, many distinct spots within the cloud markings, grayer fur, and a double dorsal stripe. Clouded leopards from the mainland have large clouds on their skin with fewer, often faint, spots within the cloud markings, and they are lighter in color, with a tendency toward tawny-colored fur and a partial double dorsal stripe.

This is cool, you normally don't hear about new species unless its some sort of rare bug or a type of bacteria or something. Here's a picture of the new leopard:http://www.999today.com/_res/2007/03/15/20062.98.8.400.270.300.200.jpg

It is amazing they never noticed the difference all this time, isn't it?

Uhm, no, being a species by itself, it can't. Well, not and produce fertile offspring, anyway.Wait, is that a general rule? I didn't know. >.< I always thought that just applied to certain species.

Edit: Oh no, I'm posting in my own little time warp bubble again. *mopes*

Going OT, but has anybody seen the Planet Earth episode with the Snow Leopard? It was the first good, intimate footage of it ever.

Uhm, no, being a species by itself, it can't. Well, not and produce fertile offspring, anyway.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liger
While male ligers are sterile, female ligers are fertile, and they can reproduce. If a liger were to reproduce with a tiger, it would be called a ti-liger, and if it were to reproduce with a lion, it would be called a li-liger. The fertility of hybrid big cat females is well-documented across a number of different hybrids. This is in accordance with Haldane's rule: in hybrids of animals whose gender is determined by sex chromosomes, if one gender is absent, rare or sterile, it is the heterogametic sex (the one with two different sex chromosomes e.g. X and Y).

According to Wild Cats of the World (1975) by C. A. W. Guggisberg, ligers and tigons were long thought to be sterile: In 1943, however, a fifteen year old hybrid between a lion and an 'Island' tiger was successfully mated with a lion at the Munich Hellabrunn Zoo. The female cub, even though very delicate, was raised to adulthood.[12]

Considering that they're two different genera (the leopard is Panthera pardus, this is Neofelis sp.), no.

Again, ligers, tigons.

Unless of course they successfully mate a woolly mammoth and a rhinoceros. Woolly Rhinoceroses are the definition of kickassery, while Ligers mearly seep it.

*Fully endorses this discovery* I'm sure the leopards will be happy to hear that. :p Also: you post too much (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12433509&postcount=103).

Lions and tigers share the same genus, though. They're both in Panthera.

I hope Borneo doesn't get raped, from what I hear it's one of the last places on earth that hasn't been fully explored yet.
