[punk, not techno]I'd wager that was not the clarification most people were thinking about. :p

I've decided that I'm becoming tired of metal, and have decided to try and get into hardcore [punk, not techno]. So I'd like some recommendations: what are the most essential albums? What are some of the subgenres and their best bands? I'm talking about all kinds of hardcore, from Black Flag to Converge.

I'm counting on you guys! Thanks in advance for the recommendations.

You probably know Refused already? Crass? Nomeansno? Angry Samoans? The Wipers?

Early Neurosis and Corrosion of Conformity? (the former in particular improved when they crossed over into metal, though) Facedowninshit are pretty cool too....but on the heavier side again.

I'd wager that was not the clarification most people were thinking about. :p

I'm slipping. The first thoughts were of the music.

Typical of you Nationstates folks to assume every other thread is a porn thread :p .

Maybe it would have been wiser to post this on a music forum, but if I posted this on a non-hardcore music forum I'd get blasted for blasphemy and if I posted this on a hardcore forum I'd get blasted for ignorance.Noooo, you'll get lots of info, I'm sure. I just couldn't resist making a crack about the obvious. ;)

On a whole other, most astonished note: Did you just manage to change the thread title yourself??? Or did a mod do that? (Not that you'd know the latter, but maybe they read this and say so?) Because I thought we couldn't do that.

Already a fan of both bands, although I mainly know Neurosis for their metal material.

We can't. A mod must've done it.

Yes you can. Click edit, then go to "Go Advanced". Then you change the title of the post. Most forums allow the poster of a topic to edit the topic title in this way.

Really? Hmmm...that must be relatively new. We didn't used to be able to do that here.

EDIT: Excuse my ignorance. Is there a reason why the responses in this thread and in this forum in general keep showing up *before* the posts that prompted the response? For example, the original thread post is showing up third, the two responses to this post are above it...???

The infamous Jolt time-warp.

The explanation bandied about is that jolt has 2+ servers (If it means webservers, this is true; forums.jolt, forums2.jolt, forums3.jolt at least; if it means database servers, who knows?), and their clocks read different times, so posts going through different servers might wind up in the wrong order.

I doubt it's really that simple, or (you'd've thought) somebody would've just reset the damn clocks by now.

Yeah, right. There are people who have suffered various fuckups with their accounts here and have been waiting over a year for the jolt admins to do anything. I'm sure Fris could tell you more about that if he spots this thread, since he was the one I believe looking into most of them...I only have a vague recollection from some threads in the technical forum.

If you mean All That Remains, then metalcore would be the subgenre...Gothencore/Swedecore if you want to be really specific. I generally think of metalcore as more of a metal subgenre than a hardcore subgenre, though.

Atari Teenage Riot are digital hardcore, gabber + industrial + hardcore punk, sometimes with breakbeats. ATR is the shiznit.

I'm not really into tough guy hardcore, but I'll name some emo, grindcore, mathcore and powerviolence bands you might like.

Orchid, Pig Destroyer, Charles Bronson, Combat Wounded Veteran, Saetia, City of Caterpillar, A Day In Black And White, Neil Perry, Bucket Full of Teeth, Ampere, Panthers, Head Hits Concrete, Swallowing Shit, Spazz, Man Is The Bastard, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Nasum, See You Next Tuesday, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Disfear, Brujeria, Envy, Behead The Prophet No Lord Shall Live, The Locust, Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Botch, The Swing Kids, Some Girls

Choking Victim/Leftover Crack/Crack-Rock Steady 7 are all good ska/hardcore. If you haven't heard Minor Threat, you haven't lived. Embrace (U.S.) is a good Emo-core band. Early Bad Religion, Husker Du, and Black Flag are must haves.

Another interesting group I just got in to is Black President.

DOA's Hardcore '81 is prolly as good a place to start as any.

But I'm guessing you're looking for things like DRI, Nuclear Assault, SOD or possibly NYHC like Agnostic Front.

Hardcore isn't one partucilar thing, it's a really fucking broad term covering anything from Oi! to pathetic whimperings of angsty teens. You should try to narrow it down a bit.

Speaking of HC, I was just kissing my beautiful immigrant wife goodmorning with Dr.Martens Skinheads going:
Skinhead girl, Skinhead girl
Your beauty's over town like a rainbow in the sky
Skinhead girl, Skinhead girl
You must protect your name, so our race will never die.
In the background, so it dawned on me it might be a good idea to check into some new, non-Nazi Oi! Anyone got some recommendations?

The world would be better off without this type of music. You're oversimplifying. The improvement's produced by the synergism of removing both you and this kind of music from the world.

Anyway, what's the problem? It's not exactly infecting the airwaves. Chances are you're not gonna know what it is, unless you make a point of getting to hear it.
