Well, you can't tell the topic of the thread from the title, can you?;)

Edit: I'd better mention that I have an inkling for Folsom Prison Blues and Man in Black.

Hurt.

Well, it's the best song ever performed by Johnny Cash.

His cover of Personal Jesus is pretty good as well.

Yeah. He has plenty of good ones, but Walk the Line is one I usually enjoy more than others.

"Walk the Line."

This from a jazz, rock guy. Johnny Cash seemed to cross all genres pretty damned well. His cover of "Personal Jesus" was pretty awesome and I agree with IV Stalin unreservedly about "Hurt" although it is my second favorite.

Cocaine Blues or Folsom prison blues. Both are good.

folsom prison blues.

im not a huge fan of johnny cash. his singing always seemed to be to be less passionate than the song lyrics. so "ring of fire" is a bland rendition of a song about extreme passion. same with "i walk the line"; i never feel that he is really walking a line.

thats why folsom prison blues is my favorite of his. its much more in a folk song style than an anguished song about a man who cant stand to hear the sound of freedom from inside his cell.

Also Walk the Line--but that's too easy

There is a funny one about him getting arrested for picking an apple, it's named after a town in the south but can't remember the name.

Cocaine Blues from Live at Folsom Prison.

Also Hurt, Cash's version is possibly the most depressing song I have ever heard.

Too many to choose just one.

1. 'Five Feet High and Rising'. Mother Nature's always been a MF'er.

2. 'The One On the Right Is On the Left'. A great song about politics; I highly reccomend checking it out if you haven't heard it. Just like the rest of his music (timeless), it's so valid today...

3. 'Sunday Morning Coming Down'. Technically Kris Kristofferson's song, but I believe Cash's version is more well know.

I could go on and on and on and on. It would actually be easier to post which Johnny Cash songs I don't like...

I don't know. I find it almost inspiring. Especially the chorus (yes, I know that's kinda odd). For those who don't know the song, here are the lyrics to the chorus:

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I heard it when he first released it, in 2002, and it gave me the strength to make an important decision in my life. Now I'm faced with a similar decision and I'm listening to it again.

Isn't Hurt a cover from NIN? I'm too lazy to look it up myself. If you've loved Cash's version, you have to see the video that goes with it. Wow.

Ring of Fire, Walk the Line, I'm So Lonesome (with Nick Cave) and actually my very favorite is his cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water.

This is so weird because I just finished listening to American IV before I came on over to General. :D

Yep, it's one of those rare things - a cover version better than the original.

Definitely. On the NPR piece I was listening to, they said that Trent Reznor about peed his pants when he heard that Johnny Cash asked to cover his song, and he absolutely adored the new version.

I think the one you are thinking of is Starkville City Jail.

I've been collecting JC albums since 1967. I find the video of Hurt very poignant.

You and June are sadly missed John....

That's not entirely strange, at least not to me. I've personally found that some of the most morose, depressing yet introspective, and seemingly hopeless moments in life can be the most inspiring. Hurt, especially JC's version, captures that sentiment beautifully.
