Well, generally I agree, american beer isn't generally very good. There are however guldkorns, and it would be nice to find them. I've found so many other great beers, thought it was time for the US to do its share of damage to my liver. :)

Oh come on, Anchor Steam's great, and I'll have to try that Stone Russian Imperial Stout, sounds interesting, but there have gotta be other small brewing companies in the US... why is nobody speaking up? Does nobody from the US on NS General like any decent beer?
I would think a topic about beer would get more responses. You'd almost think NS General was a den of sobriety.

It is nothing. The thread asked for names of good beers from the United States. Obviously, you've never had any. You're just using what would otherwise be a completely harmless thread about beer as an opportunity to act like a jerk. It's childish and really not one of your funnier escapades. No reason to do so. It's just beer, which I would think wouldn't be such a controversial subject.
I will admit, if you're looking for good beer, don't go anywhere near anything that says "Bud," "Miller," "Coors," or anything that's advertised on TV here. That is stuff is fucking nasty. Anchor Steam, as mentioned before, is a good small beer. Coastal Fog is a good beer that nobody except me seems to have heard of. There's a small brewary named Stanislaus something, up by the river of the same name. Generally, what is advertised on TV is stuff to stay the hell away from.

And the caveat was that to ask of "good" from people from the US when it comes to beer is quite the imprudent thing to do. It's like asking a witch's child which of the teats is less sour. No, you're the pathetic one. This is a thread about beer. Beer. It's not even political (ironically, if it was, I'd probably be agreeing with you). Somehow, you've managed to be an ass and inject negativity into a thread about beer. You're as prejudiced as any homophobe. About beer. It's sad really. I am simply stunned. Initially, I tried not to be rude in my disagreement with you, but obviously there's no point.
If you're basing your opinion on American beer on the likes of Budweiser, that's rather like me basing my opinion of Scandinavian furniture on Ikea. I'm sure I could get far better from a local shop than a huge company. The same applies with beer. The fact that instead of presenting examples or anything of the like and instead simply resort to demeaning me (over beer, beer!) for no reason is unfortunate.

There are some damned good American beers, you just really have to look for them. They're often from small breweries that only ship within their state or within a few states. Rarely do they make it overseas.
I've discovered that French beer is just as bad, if not worse than mass produced American beer. If it weren't for the Belgians I'd probably have died in the month and a half since I've moved here. Do note that the French do make up for their shitty beer with decent, inexpensive wines and hard ciders.
As for a particular American beer, I'm a huge fan of anything from Bell's Brewery, especially their Best Brown Ale (http://www.bellsbeer.com/branddetail.asp?BrandID=8). Unfortunately, Bell's has a limited shipping area in North America.

Hooray, a real beer drinker. You're right, French beer is shit as is their wine which they're having trouble selling now because of the global market.
It's a sad fact that the only American beers we get on this side of the pond are from the big branded names that have the money and marketing muscle. While I was in Boston, the pub across the street from the hotel did mostly European bottled beers, I wonder why???

BEER. It is hard to describe the best beer in the U.S. On second thought it is relatively easy. Almost everything in the U.S. can be divided into two types, the mass produced and the great. Now I would prefer to be a local snob, prefering my own nearby Southampton Public House, but instead I will go north and west, still remaining in my state, to the mecca of Baseball. I give you THE THREE PHILOSOPHERS!

The US has a crappy mass-market, that makes up the bulk of our beer industry, but on a more regional to micro-scale we have hundreds and thousands of types of delicious beers available.

There's an awsome brewery in Maine called Alagash, and they make some of the very best Belgian style beer (my fave) that I've ever had. I'd call that the best american brewry outside the city I live in, Portland, OR, which is the beer capitol of the US ;)

Erm, yeah, I saw that. I wanted to know which, if any, is clearly the best, or should I just choose according to my own taste?
Try the Lager.

I have access to a very limited selection.
So far the best I've had is Sam Adams. Sad, I know.

In my opinion there is no such thing as good beer .... domestic or foreign.
I'm sorry that your life is devoid of the joy that is beer :(
Anyone tried this one (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/three-floyds-dark-lord-russian-imperial-stout/15917/)? I stumbled across it on that site aaaaaaages ago, and not only was the design extremely cheesy (in a "I want one of those bottles!" way), it also sounds awesome. Doubt i'll ever have the pleasure of trying it, though.

I've had it once. It was pretty tasty, but it's a bitch to find.

Brooklyn Brewery-- Black Chocolate Stout modelled after imperial stout is very good. Samuel Adam's dark beer is also very good.

The imported kind.
Seriously, I like some microbrews, but I prefer hard alcohol.

until this last year i've always been too young to drink beer in the states (stupid law...)
sadly i no longer drink beer now that i am of age, heh :P
Nobody pays attention to that silly law. You just need someone over 21 to go into the store and buy it for you.

Do you have "White Beer" in America?Yes, we have white beer. And you were across the street from a hotel, probably in Copley area, in which case, they're just catering to tourists. I'm willing to bet there were no Bostonians there...we are all out in Allston and down by Fenway
You are right, American beer tastes like ass, I can only take your word for it as I don't try ass. We use them for taking slow rides along the beach here while drinking tea and eating icecream. And the bar in Boston does an excellent trade in good imported European beer 'cos American beer tastes, like you say, ass.A) try not taking quotes out of context.
And they are catering to tourist tastes, not Bostons or Americas
Good US breweries: Magic Hat, Otter Creek/Wolavers, Long Trail, Sam Adams, River Horse, Harpoon

Frankly, beer in general tastes like horse piss. Since I don't drink it, I'm not sure what's good and what isn't, but I know that relative new-comer Samuel Adams has a large variety of beers and lagers, and apparently has won quite a few awards.
On a side note, my mom's side of the family is German, so naturally they used to own a beer company lol. They sold out to Anheuser-Busch.

They didn't have any. Hadn't even heard of the brewery. :(
Though the guy said that Liberty Ale is the best beer he's ever tried - so I bought a bottle. It's ok, but best beer ever? Not a chance.

I'm not much of a drinker, but when my wife and I were exploring New England; a resturant in Mystic-CT made their own beer. It was nice. Not that I remember what it is--it's been years.

Well there are only 3 breweries around, and 2 of them are in PA, the other is in FL.

The Four Peaks Brewery here makes some very fine beers, especially anything they cask condition.
Every Thursday, they pop open a new cask, and pour forth beer both enormously delicious and completely unavailable outside their pub.

You are wrong, have you ever heard of a Government Agency by the name of " Fire Arms, Tobacco, & Alcohol? These people do pay close attention to that silly law as you call it, and they take it very serious.

I'm a Beck's drinker, myself, but since it's really a German beer brewed in the States (or in Germany, as the case may be), that doesn't really count that much.
Sam Adams is above average as far as American beers go.
