NORFOLK, Va. — A federal judge said Wednesday that Sudan is responsible for the bombing of the USS Cole but he needs more time to determine damages for the families of the 17 sailors killed when terrorists bombed the ship in 2000.

"There is substantial evidence in this case presented by the expert testimony that the government of Sudan induced the particular bombing of the Cole by virtue of prior actions of the government of Sudan," U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar said.

The hell? Sudan?

...well, even if from AP...it's reported by Fox News...so I'm wary for the moment.

Was I the only one to read Sudan and think Saudi Arabia at first, though?

Al Qaeda was based out of Sudan for much of the 1990s so I can definitely see them being partially responsible.

God I hope so.

Well it's only because for some reason I pictured Saudi Arabia as responsible for it since it would be something they'd do, and the idea of the Sudan being responsible for it seemed...extremely odd, so I mistook them in my mind even with the words right in front of me.

Surely many of you have done just that before, right?

Apparantly, Sudan also has instigated the genocide in Darfur, atleast so says the UN.

bin Laden himself lived there for for several years and was under CIA surveillance, but wasn't thought very dangerous then.

I keep hearing (probably from loony conspiracists) that Al-Qaeda wasn't even an organized group until around sept 11th, and thats when we gave them the name, and thats when they started gathering structure. It has nothing to do with the topic, but I was just wondering if anyone can tell me that this is wrong?

I'm pretty sure they were around before that. But 9/11 is full of holes still, atleast the official story is. At the very least the Pentagon story reeks of bullshit.

This reminds me of blaming Germany for the Lusitania - and lying about how it wasn't carrying arms. Got America into WWI, based on a lie.

Or the Spanish American war, and the Maine. That's directly comparable. But hey, we got to slaughter Pacific islander natives, butchering entire fucking villages. For the Maine!

Now maybe we can go to war with Sudan. Invade, conquer, occupy their nation, set up a government in our own image, extract their resources for our own use. For the Cole!

It may "reek" to you, but my dad was IN the Pentagon. He SAW the plane hit. He SAW the wreckage.

Except the Lusitania was sunk in 1915, two full years before the US entered WWI. The Zimmerman Telegram played a much larger role in the US entrance as well as more attacks on passenger ships when Germany restarted unrestricted sub warfare in Jan. of 1917.

Actually the Lusitania was only carrying small arms ammunition and under international law the Germans had to ensure the passengers safety before sinking the ship, even with the presence of ammunition

Actually Spain declared war first when the US mentioned military force as a possibility to stabalise the situaiton in Cuba.

China already has us beat to Sudan's oil reserves, and it's not like the Sudanese government are a bunch of Boy Scouts.

Big deal. It was a rallying cry that motivated people into getting into the stupidest european war with millions of people's lives thrown away.

The US wanted a war. They wanted land. They got it.

No one's government is a bunch of Boy Scouts.

And you're right, we're probably not going to go to war with Sudan for the oil. Nah, just for the power and the carrying out of the hawk agenda. And because of the unannounced war on Muslims.
