Don't know why I want to know. Don't much care, neither. Vote. The consequences of this poll shall be enormous. No crying about, "my favorite publisher isn't up there." All who cry shall be struck with the ugly baby stick.

I liked Square when it was square soft, and not square enix.
Um, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Lucasarts are like my top three.
I've been bitten in the butt by EA too many times. Like with their Lord of the Rings games.

They're licenced! If you didn't get dire, unplayable tripe you did well!
Although I do expect EA to get a lot of hate. They're not well-liked.
I don't have a favourite, though. I just buy the games I like, publishers be damned.

I will not be bothered by your common sense and rational opinions. I will grow angry about inconsequential things, instead.

Really? I think that sims/simcity, Battle Field, C&C, medal of honor, NFS, etc are all real good games.

I'm playing Bully as we speak. Take-Two owns Rockstar, by the way.

Sims and Simcity are definitely good but I didn't really care for Medal of Honor (I played the last one) all that much. It was OK but probably better if you are into playing online (which I'm not).

I have to vote EA because most of my games come from them
Curse monopoly pushers :(
I also want to give sega a few good marks as it has done rather well with taking over Total War Series :)

And what about Activision, Bioware, or Rockstar? Blizzard?
Nintendo for the win!

What can I say? I'm an unabashed Nintendo fanboy.

And what about Activision, Bioware, or Rockstar? Blizzard?
Activision's on the list, Bioware is a developer (published - at least in the case of Neverwinter Nights and the Baldur's Gate 4-in-1 box set - by Atari), Rockstar's been mentioned (published by/owned by/metamorphosed into Take 2 Interactive, whatever).
Blizzard I don't know, I've got none of their games.
Microprose. I am hard pressed to think of a poor game they released, and i've played most of them. Civilization, Master of Orion, F-19 Stealth Fighter, Darklands, X-Com: UFO Enemy Unknown, Gunship 2000, Pirates!, Falcon 3.0...all classics in their own right.
To prove i'm not the only one with this opinion and talking out of my butt, (http://www.the-underdogs.info/company.php?id=269&sort=rating) They have merely a single game here rated below 7/10. Most of them are above 8, and their obvious classic, Civilization (as well as a few other titles), is omitted.
To quote from that site:
Before the buyout, one of the most obvious strategic mistakes that Microprose made during that period was the deluge of games it released to the unsuspecting public. Many excellent games in this crop failed to attract public attention simply because the market was already saturated with games or, to be more precise, most gamers were still attempting to find all the nuances of Civilization, a Sid Meier masterpiece released in 1990.
How many modern developers would release so many awesome games that there were just too many for fans to play? Good thing i've had plenty of time to catch up. :p
You can download some of the games there but do so at your own discretion as abandonware is a legal grey area.
I also enjoy Paradox' grand strategy games immensely too - Hearts of Iron, Victoria, and Europa Universalis in particular. Lucasarts have some quality releases, both old and new (but mostly old). Honourable mention and RIP to Origin. Used to love Blizzard too, but since Starcraft...meh.
No Insomniac or Naughty Dog? The platformer kings of the PS1, PS2, and PS3?
Also, if you die in the game you die for real.

Microprose.
Ooh, good call. I'll have that one.
If we're going to go back into the Mists of Time then we have to remember that EA published Bullfrog's games before they bought them. That's got to be worth a few brownie points (the publishing, not the buying).
And Codemasters. Not seen them do much lately (last I remember was Perimeter), but they're great too.

These are not on my list of options. I don't know how they failed to appear except to say that it is their own fault.
Sony. God of War anybody???

Oh, EA published good games back in the day (I mentioned Origin in my last post, but neglected to note that they were a developer and not a publisher - nevertheless published by EA and made fantastic games. Ditto for Looking Glass, and yes, Bullfrog.). It's only since the late 90s that they've begun a slow descent into shittiness.
Pshhh, god of War. Nintendo obviously wins because of:
Shigeru Miyamoto
Mario
Zelda
Metroid
Star Fox
Pikmin
Donkey Kong
F-Zero
Wave Race
Earthbound
Fire Emblem
Advance Wars
Brain Age
Nintendogs
etc.

I hadn't noticed that System Shock 2 was published by EA!
Well I think I'll vote for them, then. Partially because of all the excellent games they've produced in the past, and partially because Pantless sounds like he gets vexed by people liking EA.

SS2 is the best game of the past decade, in my opinion. Hopefully Bioshock will take that crown away from it.

It's my favourite game ever. Even if I've played others far more, the sixteen hours I spent with SS2 were outstanding. Bioshock has a lot to live up to, but it looks like it's doing at least one thing SS2 managed; creating an actual, plausible place for you to be in. And in the most recent video I saw, the way the little girl desperately scrabbled away from the player in terror... I wasn't so impressed with the bashing of her keeper (I don't like baddies that're just big sacks of hitpoints), but that bit actually made you feel evil.
Out of this sad list it's a definite Square-Enix, though Nintendo does come close.
Had other companies such as Ensemble Studios, Gas Powered Games, or Blizzard been up there...we'd have some actual competition.

Of those listed, I like Take Two, is also responsible for Rockstar and 2K.
EA releases too many games that feel sloppy and unpolished to be considered one of the best.

The only two I know are Mythic (now part of EA) and Blizzard. You know, with over 6 million WoW subscribers, one might question their omission from this list. However, you asked for "best," not "most popular." Since one must assume "best" includes Customer Service, and Blizzard seems to use the other meaning of CS, I applaud your choices for not including them :)
You left out Atari/Infogrames, ut no one would have voted for them anyway.
Publishers are an unnecessary barrier to entry in the game market. Even major development houses (like BioWare) are moving toward direct digital distribution of their games, bypassing traditional publication agreements (I'm downloading Jade Empire this very moment).
Isn't WoW published by Vivendi? Blizzard's just the devloper.
Hold on, are we voting for publishers or developers here? IG/ND are developers, along with Blizzard and a few others.

I would think that those responsible for a game's content and mechanics would be the most important, wouldn't you?

Publishers, not developers. Although they're not necessarily seperate entities; many publishers have in-house development teams (eg. EA, Microprose) and some used to be developers but are now both (eg. Codemasters).
Because if it were developers the correct answers would be "Looking Glass" and "Bullfrog" :p

Bungie. Blizzard. Cavedog. Firaxis. Stainless (Carmageddon!). Koei. Vic Tokai.

Also, are talking console or PC?

Those are all developers, but I will absolutely second Firaxis and Koei.
Whoever owns Working Designs. Those guys go all-out. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Growlanser Generations, to name a couple.
Those are all developers, but I will absolutely second Firaxis and Koei.
Firaxis is one of my two favourite developers (with BioWare), but judging publishers is a lot more than looking at the quality of games.
Are the games released before they're done (Atari, EA)? Do they have a high error rate, or annoying DRM (Atari)? Are they really controlling regarding content, or will they let the developers just go ahead and make the best game (LucasArts)?

Shit... are you kidding?
Ignorant.
The only real C&C games were made by WESTWOOD STUDIOS.
I like Square Enix... they have awsome graphics in their gameplay.
Blizzard blows.
They've been fortunate to develop some very fine games, despite how much I hate them. However, they can't maintain those games to save their lives. Diablo has been hacked into nothingness, WoW is one of the only MMORPGs to be plagued by 3rd party bot programs, and Starcraft...well they did a good job with that one ;)

I like LucasArts (Empire at War), Infinity Ward (Call of Duty) and Westwood, because Red Alert 2 is a classic, but I'll vote for EA because I like Bf2 and Tiberium wars looks good.
LucasArts because I loved playing Tie Fighter and Eidos Interactive because I'm very biased in favor of Deus Ex.
