Maybe because I don't have a very [my gender] NS name? When someone hasn't told me explicitly and I haven't talked to them all that much, I tend to go by the name.

Actually I find, as a fairly casual poster - note the low post count in five odd months - to make a rep for yourself you need to be either controversial (MTAE) or extraordinarily prolific and post 1,000+ in a couple of months. Otherwise I stick to my previous assertion re 1,000 posts or a year in NSG. I will admit that becoming known through controversy/being prolific do fit in with your niche idea...
