Hero or McCarthy
How do you feel about politicians trying to "protect" your children for you? Are they heroes or are they just using your fears to stay in power?
neither. they are people taking up the slack from parents too lazy to raise their own kids and wants someone else to do it for them.
We've moved away from a community-based model of child-rearing, in great part because of urbanisation. I think we are trying to maintain some sense of a wider social responsibility for the welfare of our children (and our adults really) via the government. It does not necessarily always work out, and I'd prefer a return to the community-model. Even though for many, many decades, simply being born into an aboriginal family warranted state intervention (and removal), I still believe that it's better to have some sort of system in place, (flawed but capable of improvement) than nothing at all.
Stupid "God told us to. Jebus luvs us, so listin two us!" Cons. Stupid "Liberal governments know what's best. You are a fucking retard. Obey us. Obey us or you have gay sex with Bush...and hitler. Hitler disagreed with us, so if you disagree with us, you are a nazi. Ooga booga." Libs.

What the HELL are you talking about?
No, seriously, what the hell are you talking about?
I also don't see what any of this has to do with communism.

I suggest ignoring the obvious flaws in the opening post, and the subsequent posts by the OP himself. Better to take this thread and mould it into something useful.

Ahhhhh there is no spoon!
God forbid our children will be exposed to reality before the age of 18.

I’d say there mostly just out for re-election but the ones that do actually care usually don’t understand that there is no formula to raise children its all guesswork
Plus I don’t trust the state with young childrens minds

call me ignorant, but who am dis macarthy? i reckon there's some who are genuinely well meaning but just don't understand why people take issue wit the regulation of their lives, while most of them are just pursuing the paranoia vote.

McCarthy. Senator. Fella ruined the lives of hundreds if not thousands of people in anti-Communist witch hunts.
Inadequate comparison in this case. Video game control is about censorship, not ruining people's lives.
A more apt McCarthy comparison would be shipping goat herders to Gitmo without trial. That's some fucking McCarthyism for you.
But it's ok, you're safe and sound across the pond.

Pandering fuckwits, the lot of them.
I can protect any children I may have myself, thank you...
Protect them from what?
I think we should eliminate all the laws that restrict what a minor should be able to watch, read, play, and so on. In the few cases where such protections are necessary, the sort of narrow intervention required is more effectively left to parents than granted to the state.
For the most part, I think it's a pointless distraction by politicians trying to get votes. I couldn't care less if teenagers watch pornography or violent movies, and honestly I have a hard time understanding why others are so concerned.
Jackasses. They was all this time, money, and effort on silly shit like banning red ink, when there are still plenty of kids who need saving from real shit like their parent's daily beatings.
We already have laws against child abuse.
And by McCarthies, I mean politicians who use the public's fear as a political weapon. Doesn't have to involve Communism. It would be like a politician exploiting many parents' fear of violent video games turning their kids into cannibalistic psychopaths to stay in power. They might attempt to ban video games and demonize developers and publishers to keep up the appearence of caring and action. The ban would be highly unconstitutional.

I don't believe in censorship. If YOU don't want YOUR kids to see something, it's YOUR job to take care of that. Not the government's.
What I find even more sad is that they seem more concerned about kids seeing sex than seeing violence. And if you're going to worry about kids seeing things, that seems a bit backwards to me. Oh well, I saw movies with plenty of both as early as about four or five years old, and I turned out okay. I didn't even understand what the point of the sex scenes was at the time, of course. I thought they were boring.

To be honest, I think they're playing on the fears of the parents who don't want their kids exposed to reality, just to stay in power. That's why the US is going to the crapper, it seems like parents want the state to raise their kids, which is why kids suck at school and why schools suck kids' brains away.

I've seen plenty of movies with sex.romance scenes, and I hate them because they seem so fake and just so... ugh. I hate those movies that are full of that.
However, I can't stand to watch violence. I don't mind sex/romance nearly as much as I do violence.

Yeah, but you just don't like them, you don't seem to be of the opinion that shitty movies are dangerous.
I'd say that many-or-most such politicians actually do care, but they're hopelessly ill informed regarding the sheer futility of their chosen methods thanks to the true nature of much of teenage culture. Culturally and technologically they're some 20 years behind @ best, and they often don't get that these video games are frequently LESS violent/graphic than the realities of teenage gang warfare and promiscuous sexuality that prevail in many areas, and that their kids that age are probably already too familiar with to "protect" from anyway. Amazing... the damage that well-meaning fools can always cause if you let them.
