I'm trying to get ideas so that way I can do some work over spring break(which i am currently on). So what are some cheap things that a college kid can do for the community?

And also, what have you done in the past?

you could volunteer in a local charity shop for a few hours a week. most of the volunteer work i've done has been conservation stuff, although i did help out in a pre-school at one point but that wasn't out of choice.

I hand out gloves and coats to the homeless in NYC every year, as well as do one of those things where you buy gifts and such for unfortunate children around Christmas.

There are tons of things you can do. I volunteered to clean a after school section of a church (a place where members would go until their parents got home from work). You'd have to do that in evening after the kids are out, but I be you could find one in your area that could use the help.

I've volunteered to tutor, though spring break is a bad time for that, but it's something you can do even while school is in session.

Check with community groups. Politics. Theater. Religious. Various causes. They're everywhere. Think about what's important to you and then search out groups with the same values.

In fact, I didn't agree with that church's teachings but agreed with the program I was supporting. There's lots out there.

I hand out food to the homeless on Friday nights when I can, though I haven't been in two weeks. I'd like to go back soon though.

You can just volunteer your time if you want, but if you really want to make waves why not start a company which streamlines and connects charities with the resources, contacts, and donations they need. You could offer it for free (making you yourself a charity), or your could charge a subscription fee or commission (making you a philanthro-capitalist firm).

Its easy to get rich for the benefit of others. ;)

I thought about starting my own charity, BUT, no time :(

I've volunteered in school libraries (they always need someone to put books away and keep after the kids).

I've packed food boxes for the needy (try Catholic Charities, even if you don't believe in the Church, they'll accept your help).

I've written letters for Amnesty International.

I've read to people in nursing homes.

Lots of stuff you can do.

Thats why you opt for 'philanthrocapitalist' and make helping charities your new business. Whilst it may seem like you are robbing the charities, you are actually providing a service which boosts their efficiency and effectiveness at what they do for a reasonable fee. Deduct the fee from the benefit of your services and you have the net social capital your firm contributes to society via the improvement of it's clients. Furthermore, the person who sell food to the priest does not feel guilty. Nor should you.

I volunteered in a kindergarten class, with special ed. children at a high school, and at a homeless shelter.

I have worked at a shelter for children who were removed from their parents by the state. Interesting work. Pretty easy, orientation is simple (not something you could just sign up for a week or so). Most of the time it was easy for me, but you should also be ready for anything.

I've been volunteering at the hospital every other Saturday. I usually discharge patients, deliver specimens and flowers to the lab, and make photocopies. Although every time I sign in, the person says its strange how my name is crossed out. I think I might have been terminated from the program for several months even though I'm still volunteering.

I'm sorry to say that I have no plans to aid the unfortunate, aside from telling jokes and giving homeless dudes spare change that I don't like carrying anyway.

I gave blood once, but I almost passed out and now I'm afraid to do it again.

Go to Egypt like you said you would.

I gave a guy $4 after he asked me for some money for food.
