The British Military is launching a series of satelites called 'Skynet'?

Are they just trying to jinx the world or something? And only marginally less worse, they have contracted the operation of the satelites out to a private company... How very secure.

You know Skynet has been around since the late '60s?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_%28satellites%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_%28satellites%29)Yeah, I wikied it quickly before posting. But I selectively forgot that part. Anyway, they've had a chance to change the name as their upgrading to a new system, but all they call it is Skynet 5. The British military is bring doom upon the people of Earth I tell you. :p

Almost all of the MoD or the DoD projects are contracted out to private companies that have to go through a lot of red, blue, yellow and, in some cases, ultraviolet tape to make sure they are secure.

Probably only because it's an upgrade rather than a totally new system. The basic point of the satellites being up there is the same.To bring about the rise of the machines? But yes, clearly, the British military will bring doom upon Earth. So long as the Americans don't beat them to it.Sounds like a good reason for arms race to me.

On a somewhat unrelated note, didn't the old MoD chief recently make an ass of himself in the press over the the impending doom of alien invasion or something? :p

He'd worked as an techie for one of these companies and he let slip accidently something that he shouldn't have. Or so he alleged.

It's true that the upper echelons of the British military come up with as many nutty ideas as the American military. the difference is that there isn't enough funding to share around for them to make huge idiots of themselves. For instance, the US military spent millions of dollars testing the practicality of remote viewing in a military context. The British could only afford to spend £18,000 on a few second rate researchers to show people picture cards for a day or two.
