For me, definitely the Beach Boys. I just find the Beatles dull. According to nearly everyone I know this makes me very, very wierd.

Camel, by far. Given the choice between stoned-out hippies and stoned-out surfers, I'll take a dromedary any time.

It's harder to get a women in the mood if they listen to a Camel and therefore, Camel fails.

You mean you've never heard the four-party Dromedary Quartet? There's nothing quite like four camels singing in 3.5-part harmony.

I remain skeptical but I'll try it out on my wife tonight. I'm keeping the Beatles on standby, though.

I really do not like the Beatles, so the other non-joke option wins per default.
but I just bought this CD: http://www.trikont.de/basics/cgi-tdb/basics.prg?session=51ad86a045f45b40_901261&a_no=99&r_index=5.1.8

Beach Boys, without a doubt. I never understood the appeal of the Beatles; their music sounds pretty bland to me.

Not so - is it not a fact that Paul McCartney can be heard chewing as part of the backing track to the Beach Boys tune Vegetables?

It is also said that Pet Sounds was a direct influence on Revolver. They were, however, in direct competition.

IIRC, The Beatles’ Back In The USSR is a piss-take of the Beach Boys sound.
Oh, and The Beatles win hands down. I’m quite amazed at the number of posters who describe The Beatles as ‘bland’. They’re anything but.

Usually everyone that really enjoys music ends up listening Beattles for a while. For the history, for the fame and also because beattles do teach you a lot about music.
Those guys changed quite a lot over the years, and they had a lot of diferent styles.

...to further complicate matters it is said that Rubber Soul was a pretty heavy influence on Pet Sounds. These things go round in spirals.

Um... oh.
Actually, I just realized I don't feel strongly at all about this issue. I like the Beatles. The Beach Boys more popular songs annoy me but I don't have any strong knowledge of them.
Why am I in this thread? Why?
Beatles. Because of the White Album and Sgt. Pepper's.

There's nothing wrong with liking both, but they're drastically different.
The Beach Boys were Evolutionary. They were a continuation (and, to be fair, an improvement) of the California Sound that started in the late 1950s. They took that music, carried it, and passed it on (the final version of the California Sound was arguably the Eagles).
The Beatles were Revolutionary. While they did build on what came before, they created something wholly new and unique. Nothing like them had been before.
For me, the Beatles will always overshine the less creative bands.

If they are so important, why are you misspelling them?
Also: I enjoy music, but I enjoy only very few Beatles songs and think most of them are only bearable in cover versions with satiric texts (as in: Yesterday / all my backups were a waste of pay / now my database has gone away / oh I believe in yesterday. / Suddenly / there are half the files there used to be/ there's a milestone hanging over me / oh yesterday came suddenly)

The beach boys were nothing more then a popular 60's boy band, though quite a decent band. The Beatles were much more, they went further then the mainstreem and kept on setting new trends and new styles which were completely original and hard to name. The Beatles were a much deeper, greater and more important band then the Beach Boys.

I think the beatles basically alwas sounded alike... Even modern bands like (MC Sar & the) Real McCoy have more stylistic variation...

I completely disagree, each album is a completely different style from the next, and even within their albums songs can vary greatly.

I think it would be a fairer fight had Smile been completed in its time. In terms of sheer influence on what was to follow, the Beatles win that. One can only wonder how things would have shaped up differently had Brian Wilson not had a nervous breakdown. Of course, if Lennon/McCartney had held out a little longer, they could have gone interesting places, too, even beyond what they'd already accomplished on, say, The White Album. Lennon kind of took over the avant-garde impulses after the split, while McCartney fell back on the pop instincts. Too bad that Wings sucked so much.

I have severe doubts that either the Beatles nor the Beach Boys would achieve that either. That would only work if she a) had the taste and sophisitcation of a kitchen sponge or b) was high on semi-legal substances. In either of those cases a camel would give you just as good a chance at succeeding...

Mozart does have variation. Would you compare The Requiem to Don Giovanni or the Jupiter Symphony. Would you compare any of those works to Eine Kliene Nachtmusik?
