News to me. The only way I hear about someone's birthday is when facebook tells me. I wonder if Osama bin Laden has a facebook? What groups would he join, I wonder?

This would be the perfect excuse for me to make that terrorist cake I'm always talking about.

I wouldn't be surprised if Terrorist Cakes had one. (BA-DUM-Tish) Dinaverg would probably know.

Bin Laden has advantage of being terrorist leader. Low rank suicide terrorists generally tend to have problems with surviving first succesful operation.

I wonder if the CIA introduced the notion of pension plans to Osama and his ilk, back in the 1980s?

Actually the CIA never funded bin Laden or any foreign religious extremist fighters in Afghanistan (through the Pakistani intelligence service). The CIA funded Afghani nationalists, Saudi Arabia funded the foreign warriors. If you don't believe me look up bin Ladens own interviews he denies ever having been funded or meeting any CIA operatives, also look at the CIA's own statements.

Yeah, you can always trust the CIA to tell the truth...

The CIA pumped funding, training and weapons into Afghanistan in the 1980s, arming the Islamist mujaheddin of the region to combat the USSR’s troops.

In the 1990s the Taliban set up military training camps in Afghanistan for Islamist fighters, inspired by the events and ‘success’ of the previous decade, and using equipment supplied ten years earlier by the CIA. Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri gave the Taliban cash to allow them to recruit fighters for attacks on the US from these camps.

Prosecutors for the 1998 US embassy bombings believed bin Laden organised them and wanted to convict him in absentia. To try bin Laden without his presence, the prosecutors used the older laws created to combat the Mafia. But these required a named criminal organisation that bin Laden headed; hence al-Qaeda. Bin Laden was only known to use the term after such events.

Moreover, bin Laden appears to be no more than a figurehead and source of cash for al-Qaeda. While bin Laden provided funds and volunteers to carry out the September 11, 2001 attacks, they were almost certainly planned by Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

If you’ve time, I’d highly recommend watching The Power of Nightmares (http://www.documentary-film.net/search/video-listings.php?e=7), a fascinating and illuminating series of the rise of Islamic extremism, spurred on by the teachings of Sayyid Qutb, and the mirrored rise of the neo-conservatives, following Leo Strauss’ philosophy.
