Spring Forward

Anti-Social Darwinism

On March 11th we "spring forward" and have an hour of sleep stolen from us. Then in November we get to "fall back." I know there's a reason for doing this in March instead of April and changing in November instead of October, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why. In fact, I don't know why we do it at all.

I know it was instituted during WWII to save on electricity, but (like income taxes) once the war was over they just kept on. Why? And why the change now?

It's beneficial to farmers, who get an extra hour of sunlight during winter in which to milk their cows during the morning hours. Or something. Whatever, it just means that I get more sleep in October, and frankly that's nothing to sniff at. Even if they take it back in April

Stupid farmers. They bitch about government encroachment, but want all of *us* to change *our* clocks so they can pretend they're not waking up at four in the morning.

I really should get around to creating that hydroponic skyscraper. The trick is to place it in an area that's far below sea level so you can pump water downwards, thereby saving energy.

I don't know why they do it in Mexico, it's not like there's that much difference between summer and winter that close to the equator. Just the northern states would be understandable, but not the whole country.

It is not a farming thing.

The concept is that people will get up a little earlier (closer to dawn) and will then get off work a little earlier. That way they have an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day where they do not need to have the lights on. Brilliant!

Seriously, it is the dumbest idea ever.

It does not save any electricity, and in fact tends to waste more energy as people go driving around and such. The only people who benefit is business – Americans (and I doubt anyone else is that different) tend to spend that hour shopping or doing various other activities. The sports industry alone stands to make millions due to the boost in people getting a game in after work.

Household illumination is such a negligible portion of our energy usage that it will hardly save any power at all, meanwhile numerous studies have shown that is greatly increases fuel consumption as people drive a lot more.

It is a dumb idea, and I have never supported daylight savings time.
We should eliminate this whole changing clocks twice a year thing altogether.

This is a modern 24-hour world. Besides, if they were really that concerned about power consumption, they would just push for more energy efficiency and encourage people to just turn the lights off at night (just check out all the empty office buildings with the lights still on at 3am).

And my personal pet peeve, the local elementary school has flood lighting in the huge parking lot and every 15 feet along the perimeter of the school lighting the grounds up like daylight 24/7. That takes one hell of a lot of power.

I hate this whole hour moving thing.

It is nothing more than attempt by the fascists that rule us to reinforce their dominion over every aspect of our lives. I see no reason for it, or any reason why it should be observed. A free people would ignore the government and carry on as usual without paying any attention to it.

Farmers are protectionist, arrogant snobs.

They play up their importance to us and ransom us for millions in farm subsidies every year. We should stop filling their pockets with tax payers money (that they then spend on fox hunting and supporting the Tories), liberalise trade regimes and concentrate on building up the agricultural sectors in developing nations.

Yes, Europe does it in the last weekend of march. However, I don't know what counts as the last weekend of march. Because it will be saturday the 31st, but sunday (when the clock actually jumps) is in April. So it might be the week before that
