Hey!

Remember how great a democracy Brazil is, how people can speak their minds? Bush said it!

I have a picture of Brazilian cops beating the shit out of a protester. I'm not sure whether or not I can post it, it isn't that bad, but still.

I love the sight of freedom.

Brazilean isn't a language, they speak Portuguese. Fora does not mean welcome. Boa Vinda is welcome, somewhat close to the spanish Benvienido.

I guess you say people from Brazil.

It's Brazilian.

And Brazilians don't speak "Brazilian", unless they speak some sort of dialect of Portuguese.

And I'm not so sure that "Fora" means "welcome" in Portuguese, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish and so they would probably say the Portuguese version on "bienevido" (sp?).

It's easy to charge undue police brutality when you are using select pictures to support your argumet, but from everything I've seen, the protestors haven't exactly been peaceful. Even beginning by mentioning the fact that Latin American protesters are notoriously violent. Makeshift projectile weapons are common amongst the crowds, and are being used against the police. The actions of the officers are warranted.

Lol, I´m brazilian. "Fora" does actually means out, so that means people do want Bush out of the US.

I want to point that most of those people want BUSH out, not the US. Some people do hate the US, but the number of people who hate BUSH is far greater.

And yes, we do loved Clinton. I and many others do think it was one of the best viewed american presidents here in Brazil. You cant even compare him to Bush. BTW, lol, after it was know that Clinton got a blowjob, his popularity increase. Many, including I, really cant understand how a president can lose his job because of a blowjob, but a guy who use fake documents and lie to his entire nation gets a second term.

Also, here in Brazil, our democracy works in a diferent way than the US. In the US, at least as far as I know, there are only two major groups: The democrats and the republicans. But here in Brazil, you have everything: communists, socialists, anarchists, greens, democrats, religious groups. That means if you want to vote, you have tons of options. And also, you have tons of groups.

The problem of these protests is that many of these more radical groups join in just to create problem. So, you always have some people inside those 10.000 who are there just to create confusion and unrest. Usually the anarchists or the punks. They always cause problems, and they are usually the ones who get hammered down and imprisoned.

I dont need to say Brazil is a violent country. It is, and its diferent compared to the US. The cops cant be as reasonable as the americans ones, because sometimes you have guys here who run around with Ak-47´s and M16´s. Not to mention some have bazookas and even anti-aircraft machineguns :D

But, in general, brazilians are very open and democratic. But its also one of the countries with the most diverse population, both ethinicaly and in opinions.

BTW, the Nazi´s comparison, some people do think Bush blames all of the US problems on muslims, just like Germany did it with Jews.

It is lacking in detail not surprisingly, either that article or a similar one I read (they are blurring in my mind) says police used tear gas and beat protesters with batons but gives no mention of why such force was needed. Only that it seems natural that protesters will go too far and the police naturally, will have to step in to pacify the rowdy crowd.

In fact, I'd made a guess that 'fora' equates to 'fuera' ...or "Get out".

Where's AB when you need him?

Playing Madden on the PS2.

'Fora' does, indeed, mean get out and is the Portuguese equivalent of the Spanish 'fuera'. As various people have already stated.

The protesters shown here are the same ones that turn up at any political event with some slogan starting "fora". Normally it is the IMF that is their target, but at times it is a visiting head of state or even one of our own homegrown politicians.

I agree in the main with what Northern Borders has to say, but he misses one very significant fact. There is still a great deal of resentment towards the USA for the meddling in the internal politics of Brazil (as well as almost every other South and Central American country) that was carried out by the CIA in the 60s and 70s. It will take a very long time and a lot of very good behaviour (not forthcoming so far) from the USA for this to be put aside. Almost every family here has some member that 'disappeared' or was otherwise severely mistreated by the military dictatorships that the USA supported. While this is still in the collective consciousness the USA is a polemic subject.

There are some, strongly influenced by a heavily biased TV media group - Globo, that believe that the USA is still the land of the American dream. Other than these idealist romantics, however, the USA is most often seen as being the local neighborhood bully that likes to make others suffer.

As to the police violence. The BBC has this to say
Trouble broke out after a small group threw sticks and rocks at police, witnesses said. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets towards demonstrators. They also used batons to subdue the protesters. Twenty people were injured, most of them police.
source - pics 7, 8 & 9 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6433977.stm)

So it seems that the overreaction of some posters here is just that, overreaction.

In picture 6 below, the T-shirt of the woman in the centre of the frame is that of MST. This claims to be a land redistribution movement, but when offered land that is not already cleared and prepared at someone elses cost, they don't accept it. They just invade productive farmland, destroying property, crops and livestock instead. They are part of the extreme left - so extreme that they are almost right again, and as such would inevitably protest anything to do with the USA.

Bush: I am here in Brazil...
to complete a deal in the makin’ of ethanol. We are asking the Brazilian government to cut down more of that big forest they have so that they can grow more sugarcane which would help save the environment. Makes perfect sense to me.

CNN said today that Brazil has already burned big chunks of rain Forest to be able to have enough "alcol" for their cars..
They do not have any surplus to export for US or China.. not without burning more rain forest... massively
