* this may or may not be real.

The first time the Guardian made me laugh in a long time was the article on his death with the headline "Is this man really dead."

I know,

I need to get out more

Jean Baudrillard did not take place.

Like the Gulf War, according to his theories, it didn't matter if he took place or not.

Jean Baudrillard did not take place.

You know how a jokes not funny once it has to be explained?

Well, I'm sorry...

Baudrillard advocated the idea that spectacle is crucial in creating our view of events – what he termed "hyperreality." Things do not happen if they are not seen to happen.

He gained fame, and notoriety, in the English-speaking world for his 1991 book "The Gulf War Did Not Take Place." In the first Gulf War, he claimed, nothing was as it appeared.

The fucked up thing is now that I read that I realized I did know who that was (I didn't know the book, so I didn't obviously get the reference) but I had read other things of his in readers.

Man, I suck. I could have been in the know, but no...

Who?

He was a Postmodern philosopher whose major achievements was the development of a theory regarding orders of simulation, and as has been previously stated, hyperreality.

Orders of Simulation: basically the order of how removed something is from a source. Picasso's Guernica could be considered a first order simulation of the actual event of the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. A paper written about the painting would be a second order simulation. It gets significantly more complicated from there.

Hyperreality: basically the belief that humanity's reliance on symbols has led to those symbols becoming more real and more personally relevant than what they actually represent.

Also: yay, I've been quoted!

On the contrary; your prior knowledge did not exist.

Touche.

And, according to a forum rule I just made up, if you use 'touche' twice in one sitting it's time to get up and do something else...(not that that needed to be announced, it's more to convince me, really...)

Well he had a good innings though didn't he?

But does this frenchie blahblah stuff that he did really amount to anything. All this navel examination and to what end?

One could argue that about any philosopher.

Hell, what good are the works of Augustine. He only gave us Just War Theory and paved the way for the Crusades...

There were wars before augustine, and no doubt there will be wars long after everyone had pretty much forgotten who he was.

It just seems a lot of effort for something, that in the end, really doesn't amount to much.

I mean, if you enjoy it, fine, knock yourself out, I just think there is a lot of undue importance placed upon these things.
