Of course, when the democratic president of the united states has an affair with a woman in his own office this is horrible, when the republican speaker has an affair with a woman while his wife is in the hospital recovering from cancer...well he's just a stray lamb who needs to find forgiveness in his heart.

AMEN.

And wow:

Gingrich argued in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton's infidelity.

"The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge," the former Georgia congressman said of Clinton's 1998 House impeachment on perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

"I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept ... perjury in your highest officials."You're so brave, Newt!

I find it more than a little disturbing that so many in the Republican Party feel it necessary to debase themselves by sucking up to Dobson, Falwell and their ilk. It does not bode well for the way the 2008 campaign is going to be run. And I would like to say that I find Dobson's residence in Colorado an embarrassment on many levels.

You know all those stories you hear about Democratic candidates having to go abase themselves before the gay and women's rights groups, the anti-gun lobby and the NAACP in order to win the nomination? There's a sense that lately, the Dobsons on the right represent one-stop shopping for Republicans. If you can win the evangelicals, you can win the nomination--that's the conventional wisdom, anyway. I don't quite know how much I buy it, especially since there's been a recent migration away from the Dobsonite wing in the popular vote anyway.

We'll see how much stroke they have in the nominating process in 2008, which candidate they get behind. For the moment, they're sort of groping around for someone. They hate McCain, despite his recent pandering. They hate Giuliani's positions, and they don't think Romney is a real christian. They also think he's a flip-flopper on their pet issues. If someone like Brownback gets the nomination, they've got all the power. They'll also lose 40 states. If Giuliani gets it, then they've been set back a bit, and they've got a shot at winning, though make no mistake about it--it's an uphill battle for any Republican in 2008.

True, the next GOP nominee definitely needs an endorsement from Dobson and his cronies. It will be interesting to see who gets it, especially, as you say, most of the front-runners seem to have feet of clay for one reason or another. I'd love to see Brownback get the nomination, though my favorite prior to 2006 was a Frist-Santorum ticket. Hell, Nazz, you and I could have beat those two!

They get more hype, and also, they have to impress a lot more people than me. I don't think I'll ever reach the point as to where my career will be decided upon how much I can convince millions of strangers that I honestly and deeply care for them and their values, so I don't think that I could ever actually be caught doing something as hypocritical as that.

There were many people in the US who condemned Clinton, and there are many people in the US who have affairs, so it is only logical to assume that the two qualities have coincided in more than just this one case.
People lie when they think it is in their best interests to do so, they change their opinions based upon changing personal status and information, and it is irrational to suspect that simply being able to convince 51% of voters in a particular area gives you superhuman powers in those respects.

Sure he's a hypocrite--he was chastising Clinton for being unfaithful, for "desecrating" the office of the President, while he was engaging in much the same conduct. How is that not hypocritical? Because he was only second in line for the presidency instead of actually being the president? It would be hypocritical even if he were only Joe Dumbfuck on the street.

Which is always a good thing. Expect it to come up in debates during the primaries... if he runs that is.

No, here's how it will go-it'll come up, but then they'll point out that Clinton lied about his affair under oath while Newt 'admitted' his frailty and sought godly guidance and is therefore a more moral and upright man because of it, and don't we want that in a leader? A man who can find in his heart to admit he's a sinner and to seek gods forgiveness? And as that bullshit takes and becomes the discussion while he 'humbles' himself on the Sunday morning talk shows ('Who among us hasn't made mistakes? He's so like us...') you'll hear a tiny snap in your brain and another small part of you will die...I'm trying to enjoy what time I have left with that part of me before that happens...
