Hundreds of Thousands Would Rather Be Romanian

Since Romania's entry into the European Union at the beginning of this year, 800,000 Moldovans have applied for citizenship -- fully 20 percent of the country. Moldova now accuses Romania of harming its national security.

Hehe, an interesting side effect. A government that hasn't performed is having its customers try to switch.

Do you reckon the nation of Moldova is going to survive?

Wasn't there talk of Romania absorbing Moldova anyways? Or am I thinking of the Ukraine?

Eh. There's still 80% of the population that doesn't want to be Romanian.

And there's the Transdniestr Republic.

safe bet that every person applying for a passport there are a one or two more going along(kids)....as for the Russians there, it's not their country, if they don't like it they can head on back to Russia, similar to the situation with the ethnic Russians in the Ukraine....

They were, but they're starting to really do well especially with their membership in the EU. In fact, Romania was one of the better-off socialist countries, along with Bulgaria and East Germany, during the 1960's and 1970's. It was only after Ceausescu ran them in to the ground during the 80's that they went downhill.

Well, surely they're not applying for Romanian citizenship so they can live in Romania... rather so that they can live elsewhere in the EU, no? They'd apply for German/Belgian/British/et cetera citizenship if they felt they'd a chance of getting it, but they're more likely to have a case for Romanian citizenship, presumably. There after they can leave Moldova not for Romania but for Germany/Belgium/Britian/et cetera.

That's probably likely; what they probably want to do is use that EU membership to get jobs as guest workers in those countries and use the higher pay to send money back to their families in Romania or Moldova with the goal of either eventually emigrating or achieving a better life in their home countries.

No doubting that Romania's a shithole. There was a whole adoption thing in my family a few years ago involving trips to Romania and bewilderment at how a place could actually be more messed up than the People's Republic of Bulgaria had been when we went there.

Do you reckon the nation of Moldova is going to survive?

Yes. But probabily will be inhabited by ethnical Russians only (those from Transdnestria or how it's spelt) because the ethnical Romanians (the majority) will have a better living as citizens of the EU. Maybe those left in Moldova will pass a referendum to ask to become a republic of the Russian Federation, thus making Ukraine angry.
(edit: I mean, ANOTHER referendum)

*lol
Considering the Romania isn't exactly a perfect paradise, I think this trend is more than a little ironic.
On the other hand, it's sad and somewhat scary to see how EU membership is being played in small-town nationalistic disputes. :(

It's pretty obvious what's going to happen. Romania will take over Moldova, become the terrorist stronghold of Europe, or so Bush will say, so we can have another colony, this time in Europe, YAY...Germany, you're next, then France...then whoever else the greatest president the world has ever seen can think of.

/sarcasm.

Although, don't put it past our almighty president to probably consider something like that.

Nah, he's probably still trying to find Moldova and Romania on a map...

Do you reckon the nation of Moldova is going to survive?

If I were to hazard a guess, i'd say yep. From my understanding, the Russian and Ukrainian minorities within the nation are quite militantly against any unification with Romania, and have enjoyed the support of their respective nations for some time.
