O is for the only one I see

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you

Oh baby don't hurt me...don't hurt me...no more...what is--ah, damn it, Rhaomi beat me to it.

Okay, how about...Picard IS the Empire: http://anightatthehothberry.ytmnd.com/

Hah. Penultimate choice. No one can post anything better.

Now, to answer the question seriously and wipe my hands clean of YTMND, love is a powerful emotion that at its core is a sophisticated expression of the mating instinct that developed due to the requirement of mating for life, which stemmed from the fact that any baby with a brain the size of a human's needs to be taken care of for quite a while before the child is ready to live on their own. Love, in other words, is nature's tool to keep us together for such an activity and to help propagate the species.

Still, for those of us who are sentient, even recognizing this we can still enjoy love for the higher feelings it gives us, or something like that. I'd be phrasing this more adequately but I'm really tired and I had a lot of blood drawn earlier today at the doctor's.

I can't be entirely sure about what you mean when you say "true love" but I can offer my two cents on what love in general is.

It's partially that, I think, but it's also something else. It's what gives us meaning, wards of despair. If a person is honest with themselves and of sufficient intelligence, eventually in life they very well could arrive at the conclusion that life is meaningless and ultimately pointless. It is, but love is the great illusion that keeps that fact from destroying our Will. Even those who never arrive at that conclusion use love as a way to keep themselves from doing so, rather that love be directed towards a personal deity, humanity in general, "all living things" or some other abstraction of the mind.

I suppose, read the wrong way, that could appear to be somewhat cynical. It isn't meant to be. Love is an illusion yes, but it is a glorious illusion. To receive it from my friends and family and even just to see it displayed between others is the reason I get out of bed every morning.

Love is all you need, silly.

That and oxygen, isotonic quantities of water and electrolytes, certain amino acids, carbohydrates, and a core temperature of 37 degrees C. But other than that...

Love is, as with all human emotions, a construct of our social intelligence requiring a more sophisticated solution for basic biological needs as a result of the complexity of that social intelligence. We have love because free sex just doesn't cut it with our big brains, dependence on social systems for survival, and certain limitations on our reproductive rates and successes (i.e., the need for assisted birth resulting from our bipedalism). Love appeared to offer a solution to this dilemma and has come to take on a life of its own in tandem with the evolution of our greater social intelligence into the abstract. Is it a means of ensuring the dispersal and transmission of our genes? Yes, but it represents a novel and sophisticated response to that need, and that novelty and sophistication, as well as how extensively it is shaped and diversified by our societal constructs, is a big part of what makes it special.

Love is a sense of symbiosis of self between people. That is, when two or more people seek to share and exchange with each other what it means to be who they are.

There is no such thing as a single "true love", though the concept can often be used in situations where this exchange is both successful and enjoyable for all parties involved.

True love? Either you're in love, or you're not. That's the defenition of 'true love', and frankly only you can tell whether or not you are in love. It pisses me off when older people will tell you that you can't possibly know what love is, as if they have figured it out and you're just starting life's journey or something. It's a matter of perspective.

That being said, I think you're in love when you realize that you not only care deeply about everything the object of your affection does, but that person returns the affection. That's pretty much it. Trust is also important. If you don't trust the person, it's not love. It's obsession, control and jealousy.

I'm no expert however.
