You have a fat kitty.Nah, it only looks like that because he's crouching. Our cat looked *exactly* the same and he spent most his time (well, second most, after sleeping) outside running around. He always got naturally skinny in summer and just as naturally "fat" in winter.

Yeah, but I'm a youngin'. I plan on starting with a kitten and seeing how it goes from there. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about cats spraying the walls and about how nasty hairballs are, that I'd rather just stick to one for now.

Get a short-haired one, and have it castrated. That will solve both problems.
It's funny how I always seem to hear stories like that from somewhere in the USA, but then again they do seem to have a strange faible for cats that are all fur, and for stay-in-the-house-kitties that don't need to be neutered...

Yes, well, there's a little operation you can have performed on the male variety that takes care of the spraying, and another for the female that does away with the males coming around for visits. Sound awful but spaying and neutering is the responsible thing to do, otherwise you'll be up to your ass in kittens and have to find them homes and all that. Not fair to them.
You will have to steel yourself to the occasional hairball, which are kind of gross, especially if you aren't quite awake when you stumble upon it. But there are treatments for that. Consult your friendly veterinarian. All this, and the cat food breath, too, is far outweighed by the sheer wonder of have that little furry creature climb up in your lap and purr. :D

My cat does look big, but she's not overweight according to the vet, as my cat is 14 years old, and it's normal for cats that are older to be a little heavier than their younger counterparts. The ideal weight for a cat is between 10-15 pounds.

I think declawing is both senseless and utterly cruel. It's illegal to have it done here in Europe. If you want to keep your cat inside the house, get it a scratching post.
Cats vary in character even more than humans do. Some are the mysterious, quiet type, others will insist on telling you exactly how they day was when you come home.

Our Kate is declawed, and seems to be okay. She never goes outside, of course. I've heard people say it's cruel to do that and others say it isn't that big a deal. No front claws will save wear and tear on your furniture and your skin, but you can deal with that by getting a scratching post. Up to you, I guess.
They seem independent and aloof but I suspect they aren't, they're just not as demonstrative as dogs (I've never enjoyed all that panting and slobbering). If you pay attention to them, they'll pay attention to you right back. I think a lot of people get kittens because they're so cute and fuzzy and adorable, without reckoning on the cat inside, and then end up ignoring the creature, so the creature ignores them back. This is also why we end up with lots of feral cats around, too.

Shelters are usually glad for everybody who takes a cat, but you might have to be fast if you want a kitten. And you have to be there in the right season, either in September or May. That's when the kittens are old enough to be seperated from their mommy. The good thing about cat mommies is that they'll teach their babies how to use the loo, so you don't normally have to housebreak them.
It might not be the best idea to get a kitten that's been seperated much earlier... I know it sounds cruel and all, but they tend to have behavioural problems.

That might be hard to find... shelters and owners start giving kittens away when they're around 8 weeks old, and the "aw" factor makes sure that most of them get taken fast.

I'm hoping to get a kitten. How hard is it to adopt one? Do shelters/stores generally prefer to sell off adult cats? Not that I know of. I'm sure they would be very happy if you adopted an adult cat instead of a kitten, because fact is most people only go for kittens, but that doesn't mean they won't give you a kitten.
As far as I know, adoption rules vary from shelter to shelter. When I volunteered in one in a college town in Indiana, they would for example not give animals to college students who were just going to live there for a few years and often change apartments several times and go spend semester breaks back home. It was a rather disputed rule, but they had just had too many bad experiences where pets would be adopted and then abandoned come next summer break.
So, basically, that shelter tried to make sure (as well as they could) that they only gave animals into good homes. But it's not like they'd inspect your home or only give animals to rich people with huge backyards or anything.
After that, all you had to do was pay the fee (don't know how much exactly that was, but not too much) which included spaying/neutering. :)

Quite right. You do have to understand that your feline overlord may just get up and stroll off, right in the middle of what for you is the best soft, furry belly-rubbing you've ever known. They do that, as if there's a little meter in there that reaches a threshold and then, okay, excuse me, I have to go.
Which reminds me of the way they are suddenly seized by an overwhelming urge to be in a different part of the house. Kate doesn't do this much anymore, but she's been known to go from zero to light-speed in less than a second, frequently taking a flight of stairs by touching only one or two. It's amazing.
And a cat can see into other dimensions, too, I believe. You'll see them just staring at things you can't see. Don't let this bother you, though, I think it's quite beneficial for the overall atmosphere of your house. Invisible bad things are afraid of cats, you see.
Okay, I'm off, gotta go report in to Her Feline Highness. ;)

So should I plan to instal a kitty door? Or are they habitual in their comings and goings? Habitual enough to know when they'll be back.
Uhm....
I dunno. We never had a kitty door. In fact, they're pretty much unknown here (Germany).
We had a house and a garden (unfenced, but in a residential area, so the cat would just wander wherever the hell it wanted) and whenever our cat wanted out he'd just walk to the porch door and meow and wait for us to let him out. When he wanted back in, he'd just stand outside in front of the porch door and meow and wait for us to let him back in, if we didn't hear him right away, he'd just paw the glass (it was a glass door) until we did. Worked out fine.
We had a kitty toilet in the basement just in case (he liked to sleep down there and sometimes the basement door would accidentally be closed, so at least he would have a place to go down there) but he hardly ever used it. Whenever he had to go, he went outside.
When we were going away over the day while he was outside, he would just wait until we got back. It's not like they'd die of cold or hunger from a few hours longer outside than they would ideally have liked to.
During the day he didn't have regular "I want to go outside now" times at all, he pretty much came and went as he pleased. And cats being cats there were many, many occasions where coming and going (and coming and going and coming and going...) were about half a minute apart, tops. Nobody ever said cats wouldn't try their best to drive you crazy. ;)
At night it was sometimes a bit of a gamble. You could put him out right before you went to bed, so as not to have him come meowing to your bed in the middle of the night because he wanted to go outside - but that could mean that he would sit outside your window and meow in the middle of the night because he decided he'd rather sleep on the couch after all.
But eh, it'll always work out. I can't remember at all how it was to get him housebroken (I was a kid and it's just too long ago), and I'm sure each cat is different, and it's certainyl different depending on if you keep a cat inside or if it goes outside, too, but it will always work out. Cats are exceedingly uncomplicated as pets (not as personalities, necessarily ;)) so don't worry.
And I'm sure the people at the shelter can give you all the advice you need. :)

They tend to be very good at that.
Cats will always come back home, but their sense of direction isn't quite like a dogs, so when you first let them out there is a risk they might get lost and not find back.
The guy at the ISPCA where I got Rakete told me to first of all leave her in the house for the first 4 weeks (we only managed 3 of them, she's too lively to just be in the house). And after that, he said the best thing to do is not feed her for half a day on a rainy day, and then let here out. Then after she's been out for about 10 or 15 minuntes, open the door and put the food bowl next to it inside. It's a very simple message to the cat : This is where it's dry, and this is where your food is. This is home.
Most cats do establish a rythm, alongside their owner/family. On weekdays, Rakete usually goes out in the morning when me or my housemate leave for work, and she'll sit in our front garden waiting for me when I get back.

You say that as if there's a difference. When the cat's in my family are bored they act pretty much like your cat on catnip... they ain't no fools, they can enjoy themselves without resorting to hard drugs. But they are also quite violent... they tend to attack the dog a lot, who being a their bitch, just sucks it all up.
Catnip is a harddrug?
But, note you did sat cats, plural. I have only one cat. Mine has no company to keep her amused.

I dunno... none of the cats that have been in my family have ever been big. They're all sleek mean mice killing machines. Except for the dim one who walks into doors and won't eat food unless its come out of a tin - she won't even eat deli meat! :eek:Hm, I dunno. I remember the female, unspayed cat my friend had - she was all small and dainty and slim. We only ever had neutered males and while I remember one of them being also of a pretty slim/stringy body type, the others looked exactly like Kryozerkia's cat and none of them was ever fat in the "overweight" sense. None of them were indoors-only cats, so they got fat in winter because they put on their winter fat stores but they lost everything back again in summer.

my cat was always pretty fat. we used to call him our 'furrypurry' :)
here's a pic of him towards the end of his 16 year life, so he was getting a lot thinner than he was... i remember him as a real rolleypolley cat :D who turned his nose up at almost any food except what we were eating... hehe :)

We've never had a male cat, and our friends have only male cats and their all huge heavy bastards (who are probably overfed as well).

But, note you did sat cats, plural. I have only one cat. Mine has no company to keep her amused.Yes, Catnip is a hard drug. You and your cat
should be doing time for supply and possesion respectively. :p
Having many cats is great though. We had four at the same time at one point. We had the warrior princess who beat the shit out the neighbourhood tomcat; the mastermind thief from which no food in the house was secure from; then was the adorably cute 'tim, nice but dim' cat; and finally the old guard queen who was then drooling, but would first get rid of a mice infestation, and then proceed to kill everything else. She was a born killer who was probably dealing with kittenhood trauma (she was a rescue cat). Sadly she's no longer with us. :(

He looks almost like our tom at home used to look... only he had a rectangular black spot right under his nose. Which is why we named him Adolf. And he definitley was one big cat, with a personality to match.
He died in April last year... my gran allowed us to bury him in her garden, under the blackcurrant bushes ("Put him there, he'll have it nice and green there")
I miss him everytime I go home :(

we chose the name because of the TS Elliot book, The Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats, and of couse the adaptation play Cats. in it there's Bustopher Jones, who's black and white, "not skin and bones"... and that fitted our cat purrfectly. plus our family name is Jones, so it all went into place, but Bustopher was too long so we just called him Buster :)

Really do you need any more evidence that cats are a favored creature in the universe than they have a drug custom made for them?
At my last place the house cat would have little drug parties with neighborhood cats. It was a trip to get up to go to the bathroom at 4am and interrupt one...
