From what I heard Ghana is actually one of the better off countries in Africa.

It is one of the best off countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. That said, it's also had a couple violent regime changes, and it's AIDS rate is still significantly higher than most western nations.

It is. It's one of the most democratic, and it's in much better shape economically than most of its neighbors. That said, it's still a very poor country with an awfully long road ahead of it. :(

Ghana doesn't have a tyranny. And most of the tyrannies it has had were Soviet-leaning ones, especially Kwame Nkrumah's dictatorship.

Somalia...

Actually, all of Ghana's coups have been bloodless, although Rawlings did execute three former heads of state and several other people after his first coup.

Somalia...

Interestingly, Somalia was a Soviet-backed tyranny from 1969 until around 1977-78, after which it became an American-backed tyranny. It was also around this time that Ethiopia went from American client state to Soviet satellite.

Interesting turn of events, eh? ;)

Hooray for independence! Here's to 50 more years.

That said, it's also had a couple violent regime changes, and it's AIDS rate is still significantly higher than most western nations. And here I thought its gonorrhea rate would be higher.

Eh. Shows what I know. I did a fairly extensive project on Ghana 2 years ago, but it's all fled my head at this point. I know that Rawlings was a military leader (Air Force, I think) of some flavor, and that they were military coups, so i must have assumed that they were violent.

S'okay. I did a project on something similar once, and forgot everything in an even shorter time period.

Yes, Rawlings was a military leader and from the Air Force.
