Greatest Sports Movies of all time

IDF

Here are my top three:

Brian's Song (1971): http://imdb.com/title/tt0068315/
Many say this is the greatest made for TV movie of all time. It is the true story of Chicago Bears runningbacks Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo. The movie is not about football, but rather their friendship and dealing with adversity. The movie is a sad one. It is considered one of the few movies that it is socially acceptable for a guy to cry during.

The Natural (1984): http://imdb.com/title/tt0087781/
This movie tells an amazing story of a 35 year old rookie named Roy Hobbs. The movie has great actors such as Robert Duvall and Robert Redford. The film's score has become iconic in the past few decades. Even after you've seen this movie a dozen times, you will still cringe every time you see Bump Bailey run through the wall.

Field of Dreams (1989): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097351/
If you believe in the impossible, the incredible can come true.
This movie is not about baseball. It is the story of the father-son relationship. This movie featured great performances from Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster. This movie is notable for being one of the few where only men cry while watching it. Any son who knows the deep meaning a game of catch can have would do so.

I am going to suggest Lagaan.

Lgaan is a bollywood musical about a young man who makes a deal with the local british overseer: if he and his team can beat the british team, they will not have to pay taxes for the next three years. If the biritsh win, the village will have to pay triple taxes.

This movie has romance, action, sports, politics, beautiful women, half-naked beautiful men, and lots of laughs.

Sports movies tend to be lame and oh-so-predictable. (What? They went and won the game at the last second? My God, I never saw that coming!)

This Sporting Life, on the other hand, is a gritty and downright depressing tale of violence on and off the rugby pitch, professional cheating, and a joyless affair between the main character and his landlady.
A nasty but memorable film - Richard Harris at his brooding best.

And all kinds of dance numbers--I enjoyed that film a lot.

Bull Durham and Major League are the two best baseball films ever, and I have soft spot in my head for The Waterboy as a football film. I'm not much for the inspirational sort of sports film--it can't usually match up to the drama on the field, though Pride of the Yankees was really good.

Brian's Song, yeah, pretty much a tear-jerker, not that there's anything wrong with that. The Natural's good but if you really like it, do not, under any circumstances, read the Bernard Malamud book. You have been warned. The book Field of Dreams comes from, Shoeless Joe, is good and is worth reading, though it's quite different from the film.

I like Bang the Drum Slowly and Damn Yankees, too, quite a lot.

Crash at the door. Annie's question is slightly taunting.
He stops, and speaks with both aloofness and passion:

I believe in the soul, the cock,
the pussy, the small of a woman's
back, the hanging curve ball,
high fiber, good scotch, long
foreplay, show tunes, and that
the novels of Thomas Pynchon are
self-indulgent, overrated crap.
(beat)
I believe that Lee Harvey Oswald
acted alone, I believe that there
oughtta be a constitutional
amendment outlawing astro-turf
and the designated hitter, I
believe in the "sweet spot", voting
every election, soft core
pornography, chocolate chip
cookies, opening your presents on

Christmas eve, and I believe in
long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses
that last for 7 days.

Well, I already knew you had good taste ;)

I dig lines like:
[Addressing Pete Aron at the Ferrari factory]
Agostini Manetta: What means far more to me than anything else is: our good name! Our reputation represents desire for perfection of the highest quality. I gamble that reputation gladly, because I have *absolute* faith in every car that leaves this factory. But I will not risk it on a driver in whom I cannot have an equal faith. There are fewer than thirty men in the world qualified to drive Formula One; a mere half-dozen, perhaps, to win. At this moment, I am inclined to think you are not one of them.
and

Jean-Pierre Sarti: Before you leave I want to tell you something. Not about the others, but about myself. I used to go to pieces. I'd see an accident like that and be so weak inside that I wanted to quit - stop the car and walk away. I could hardly make myself go past it. But I'm older now. When I see something really horrible, I put my foot down. Hard! Because I know that everyone else is lifting his.
Louise Frederickson: What a terrible way to win.
Jean-Pierre Sarti: No, there is no terrible way to win. There is only winning.

The Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Club_%28film%29).

From Wiki:

The Club is a satirical play by Australian playwright David Williamson, that follows the fortunes of a football club over the course of a season. It explores the clashes between "human loyalty versus materialistic gain". It was inspired by the backroom dealings and antics of the Victorian Football League's Collingwood.

The play was produced in 1977, appropriately in Melbourne. It has been in the senior English syllabi for four Australian states for many years, and has even run in America, under the name Players.

A film version was produced in 1980, written by David Williamson, directed by Bruce Beresford and starring John Howard, Jack Thompson, Graham Kennedy and Frank Wilson. The film was described as a "hilarious, sharply observed slice of life".
