Yeah, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex had a good 'something' to it, it was interesting, and the action scenes that it did have were great.
Amongst my other main favs are Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Beebop, that's all I've ever liked in that cartoon industry since I was in my early teens.

Stop Hibari-Kun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUlgIbIyPII) is about a young boy who, upon the death of his mother, finds out that she placed Guardianship over him with her old boyfriend.
so he travels to tokyo to start his new life.
Riiight.... first of, he's met at the airport by two huge thugs. they are kind and, in-fact servile to him. grabbing his bags and taking him to a limo waiting at the curb. inside is his new Guardian... a Yakuza boss.
so he's taken to his new HUGE home. and is given a large bedroom. the boss is rather... pensive and asks alot of... personal questions... but in the end, leaves him alone in the family shrine so he can pay his respects to his mother.
while unpacking, a beautiful blone girl opens the door that connects his bedroom with another. she looks at him, and quietly closes the door with a wink. of course he is stunned at this beauty... and after unpacking heads downstairs to meet the rest of the 'family'. sitting at the table is two girls. one slightly older... the other, younger. the Boss introduces them as his daughters.
(the boss is rather pleased that the boy (sorry, forget names) takes an interest with his eldest daughter.) ;)
He then asks the boss about the third girl. everyone goes silent. the boss replies. (paraphrased)
"I have no other daughter."
"sure you do, the blonde one... about my age."
"I have NO OTHER DAUGHTER!"
at this point... the blond girl walks in and sits next to him. the boy stammers an introduction... thinking that this was a foreign student or another 'guest'.
to which the Boss responds...
"and this is my SON, Hibari." ;)
No one outside the family knows that Hibari is actually a male. Hibari is the most popular 'girl' in school and apparently has taken an interest with him since s/he starts referring to her new 'brother' as her boyfriend.
don't ask me about the white crocodile... or the large needle...
Catseye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat's_Eye_(anime))
of course, my actual list of anime is much, MUCH longer.

True, but I still like GitS better, and InuYasha. I am surprised no one has said they like that show yet.

The creator of Catseye won't release it for American audiences... so look for Fan translations.
and Stop Hibari-kun... probably won't make it over... ever... but someone is doing a translation of it.

I try and like anime but I don't have much success. Not every story needs a giant robot (Big O was actually a pretty interesting story that really, really didn't need giant robots).
I don't like wild takes, Trigun would be an interesting setting and they would borrow some of their paneling from Leone and it would be cool, then he'd do some sort of wild take and cry out or something and it would take me out and irritate the hell out of me.
I can understand how something like Tokyo exploding could be part of the national conscience, I don't necessarily want all stories to revolve around it. Nor do I really have to see a hunchback with bees that come out of it.
No anime really has all of these things, but most have at least one of them. Cowboy Bebop is actually interesting despite the occasional wild take, and Ghost in the Shell can be interesting if convoluted and the robots aren't necessarily giant. The setting of Full Metal Alchemist is interesting, but I can't sustain watching it for very long and has far too many wild takes.
Ultimately I've just come to the conclusion that anime is not to taste. Nothing against anime, and it's not like there is an alternative to adult or mature animation stories that you can go to instead, so I can understand its popularity, I just can't get into it myself except for the rare exception.

Dude it's a lost cause. I'm a fully immersed nerd/geek, have had roommates who were really into different kinds of anime, was even a Japanophile for a bit where I tried to force myself to like it, it just didn't catch. Occasionally I run across one thats interesting or can get my attention for a little bit, but overall it's just not my bag.

Your not because that's not at all what I said. You're thrown off because all my examples come from Adult Swim, but if you pay attention I don't even like those that much, and I only brought them up because those are the most recent memory. I'm not going to bother to dredge up all the ones I watched when I was desperately trying, in fact pretending, to like anime. (Except I did like They Were 11)

First of all, DBZ is utter shite.
I'd say my favourite anime is Hellsing, though Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! is pretty good, as well. Other good animes include El-Hazard, FMA, and the "original" FMP. Alas, I've only read Death Note as a manga, but I'm sure it'd make one hell of an anime, too.

*list of dislikes*
Well, for one, Jin-Roh has none of the listed. Art style follows real world faces so no saucer eyes, wild takes, half moon mouths or anything of that sort. No giant robots, although there are German styled stormtroopers in complete full body armor with MG-42s. (Japan was conquered by Germany in this alternate history)
Another one Black Lagoon, doesn't mention Japan with the exception of the first two and the last 6 episodes. Mostly takes place around South East Asia, somewhere around Myanmar in a port city where the Hong Kong Triads, Russian mafia and South American drug cartels are at constant loggerheads. Focuses on a company known as Black Lagoon which consists of four people. A black Vietnam vet (the boss), a half Chinese woman with a short temper and a pair of guns (the gunner), a Californian CalTech grad (the tech support dude), and a Japanese former junior manager (negotiator, sometimes planner and most normal person in the crew). No wild takes, no giant robots, no Tokyo. But lots of gunfighting and people dying.
