USA: One can see people being electrocuted, burned or shot to death on t.v., but everyone will have a heart attack if a show has a naked person, especially a naked woman, in it.

UK: One can see a person suffering extreme pain on TV (plus, in movies on TV, all of the above), but everyone will have a heart attack if a show has a naked person with an erection, or a clitoris, in it.

USA: Founded by Puritans who were ok with people burning alive in hell, but believed that women had to be clothed fully from head to toe (not unlike another religion out there that rhymes with Hislam).

UK: The ASSHOLES who sent the Puritans over here in the first place. Because we all know those prudes would never have gotten along with the rest of Belgium.

Didn't the Puritans go of their own volition so that they could be separate from what they viewed as a decadent Europe?

No the British were actively persecuting them.

Beside the point really, most of the people living here are descended from immigrants from places other than England.

What is there to discuss? The government is a patronising, unfair group of bandits which like to legislate the way they believe you should think (especially when it comes to contravening you rights to choose what you can and can't handle).

i'd have said that it would be more shocking to have a naked man on a tv show. kudos to the UK for having gotten all the way to erections.

i think it only made it on to the show because the editors missed it. it was in an excerpt from a film running in the background of an interview scene with the director of said film i believe.

if there are other instances on uk tv i am unaware of them.

Really. You'd say that a naked man, something 50% of America sees in the mirror after a shower every morning, is more shocking than watching someone get his arm ripped from his body while his balls are being zapped with electricity and his fingers are being chopped off one by one?

Yeah, I guess you're right. A naked dude is more shocking.

actually, the USA won't allow the showing of Electrocutions, Burning or any form of killing. usually it's person going through the motion, cut away as sound is played, then shot back at nice neat body.

unless you're including Cable. then they also show naked people on it. and they show more naked women then naked men. ;)

Rhymes with Hislam.. :p Ah, that made my day.

I'm not as down on the Puritans, however. After all, Puritan women enjoyed wider rights than many European women of the day, even if their dress was boring, though less restrictive than was popular even in later, Victorian times. Also, if they were so cool with hellfire, they probably wouldn't have actively tried to avoid it. :)

UK: The ASSHOLES who sent the Puritans over here in the first place. Because we all know those prudes would never have gotten along with the rest of Belgium.

Sure, BUT.. would we be so obviously superior to the British today if it weren't for that fabled Protestant work ethic? :p

I try not to look at myself in the mirror, it's too horrifying for my puritan eyes to know I have a penis! Actually, I meant that it would be more horrifying in North America to see a naked man than a naked woman. Naked woman gets at most a PG-13, naked man gets an R. Naked women are a dime a dozen in tv and movies (thank god).

equal rights has nothing to do with it. north americans feel more comfortable seeing naked women than men. at least, that is my impression. it is certainly a more noteworthy event, seeing a naked man in a tv show. part of the homophobia thing methinks.

You can show plenty of sex and nudity on American TV, as long as it is cable. But yes I agree it is quite silly.

Meh, I don't think my nation should apologise for that. Seriously, the people were the biggest douchebags around. Its almost a shame that the world wasn't flat and they didn't sail right off the edge.

And @OP: there was recently footage of an erect penis (shown at extreme close-up and in explicit detail) shown on terrestrial television. It was on a program on five about sexual intercourse in modern Britain, their big, ground-breaking gimmick, is that they had wired up teeny-tiny cameras inside a woman's cervix and filmed her having sex with her man from the inside.

USA: Founded by Puritans

Err... The Massachusetts Bay Colonies are not the USA. Many other influances went into the making of the national character, including the highly important Scotch-Irish, and various convcts and indentured servants (little more than white slaves). (BTW, the independence of the colonies directly lead to Australia being utilised as England's dumping grounds).

Didn't the Puritans go of their own volition so that they could be separate from what they viewed as a decadent Europe?

It's not quite that simple.

No the British were actively persecuting them.

Again, it's not quite that simple.

"Puritans" wanted to remain as part of the English establishment, working for biblical reform from within. Even as they emigrated to New England, they affirmed their "Englishness" and saw the main purpose of their new colony as being that of a biblical witness, a "city on a hill" which would set an example of biblical righteousness in church and state for Old England and the entire world to see.
http://www.puritansermons.com/banner/logan1.htm

That's not to say there wasn't persecution. It's just not as black and white as either of you are presenting it. (And neither are the beliefs of the Puritans and other religious types being put forth.)

Beside the point really, most of the people living here are descended from immigrants from places other than England.

Indeed, indeed.

George Carlin did a schtick 30+ years ago about "fuck" vs "kill." His take was he'd rather his kids learn to fuck than learn to kill. He then substituted the word into some classic-type movie lines:
"Alright, Sherriff, we're gonna fuck you now, but we're gonna fuck you slow."
"The Mad Fucker is on the loose! He must be stopped before he fucks again!"
