Just for NSG Australians, what your personal feelings on this event and it's implications for Australian politics and the like? Is the lesson of Eureka all the more relevant because of Howard's Industrial Relations laws, and is the idea of the Republic still as popular as ever, given the hijacking of the referendum.

Meh, Howard dislikes the idea of a republican country. If it ever did occur he would find some way to concentrate powers to the legislative whilst keeping the executive as a figurehead.

Real question is that can we form a better regional alliance/group than we currently have?

Well I think just replacing the Governor General with a President or the like would be fine, this position would be free from political parties and the like.

I've been put off simply by the fact that racist, nationalist right-wing groups have hijacked the flag. I know I shouldn't be, but thems the breaks.

Heh. :p (http://www.nationstates.net/kanabia) Put simply, I think the event was of little practical importance, but one of great symbolic value.

It's association with the trade union movement is far more widespread and what most people associate it with. Eureka has gone somewhat out of vogue with the fash in favour of the regular Australian flag.

Only problem with the preisdential system is that it does become mired in legislative politics. You would have to force any presidential candidate to be independant of the legislative parties

The same problem occurs with the states. They should be more independant of the federal lots.

POWER TO THE ABORIGINAL PEOPLES!!!!!!!!!
Damn whiteies, we should be able to be able to oppress them in return!
