"The U.S. alleged then that North Korea had a large-scale gas centrifuge plant for uranium enrichment — the same program Iran now is developing. The Bush administration used that information to scrap a plan developed under the Clinton administration to supply energy to the North in exchange for its pledge to mothball its plutonium program.

Tensions rose and Pyongyang withdrew from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in January 2003, sparking the process that led to its test of an atomic weapon late last year.

Now, however, Bush administration officials are toning down assertions that such a program had been developed. Intelligence official Joseph DeTrani, in testimony to the
Senate Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday belief that such a program exists was now "at the mid-confidence level." "

It really would be so easy to deal with North Korea, except for the fact that the US is like a wife beater.

Just encourage the japanese, south koreans and taiwanese to start their own nuclear programs. Within 48 hrs the chinese will shut Kim down to forestall that happening.

Well the US could just be honest, and point out that in light of recent difficulties it can no longer guarantee their security, and while it stands ready to help as much as possible, local defense is now their own problem.

I expect they'd all have nuclear weapons within three months. Then it's china's problem.

From the looks of things? By threatening non-nuclear powers with the promise of a numerically superior invasion force.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Japan, South Korea and Taiwan aren't the only ones China has to worry about...China has fought wars with India and Vietnam too, and not all that long ago...and I'm sure the Phillipines aren't exactly keen either, what with Chinese naval construction.

China needs to reign in it's puppet before all these strings get tangled...or Dear Leader shorts his last circuit.

Well, I can understand why they would want nuclear weapons, all they need is a few dozen with good missile delivery systems and Kims regime is untouchable.

...oh, and don't forget Tibet.

One could say that all those conflicts occured while Mao was still alive, but then again, I don't live near China.
