Yup, something has happened to the screen of my laptop. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

The picture's not great. There's a line down the screen, about as thick as my index finger, and anything on the screen behind it is blurred and distorted.

You broked it. Go buy another laptop.

Based on thorough expert analysis of the provided pictorial evidence, I say what happened to the screen of your laptop is NSG.

My condolences. :(

Edit: Wait, how can you even read this? Let's make it easy for you:

Your screen has been denied a position on the Supreme Court because of extreme stances on abortion and civil rights?

That's nothing my laptop screen was shattered last year. I'd take it to my local computer place: Best Buy. Or where I bought it: Office Depot. Don't know what they have in Ireland...

Thanks, I never would have thought of trying that :p

Sounds about right.

Yeah, I'll probably have to do something like that.

Take for warranty repair. The screen is damaged and unlike a desktop where you can swap monitors, a laptop's all one in unit design means you'll probably have to without for the time of repair or even replacement.

Hehehe - that's right up there with my getting the Tom and Mark Foley mixed up in the Where's the Outrage (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=519527) thread....

(Although wiktionary gives an etymology (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bork), it'd be interesting to see a trustworthy etymology on this particular use of Bork as a verb - Swedish Chef, Rober Bork, or the transposed broke, although I do suspect it's from Robert.)

If it's outside warranty, it's probably cheaper to do as Fris suggests and buy a new one.

Well you did break it but it is fixable. The cause is fairly common and can trigger a multitude of problems within computers of all ages and sizes. The hobgoblin I speak of are misaligned electrons. They can cause anything from a little data loss or a few corrupted files to total system failures. In your case the problem is pretty small and easily remedied.

First, uninstall your monitor drivers then shut down.

Second, very carefully remove the hard disk.
2a) Very carefully remove the platter and clean it. Be sure not to scrath it or you'll completely ruin it.
2b) Run a very strong magnet back and forth over the whole platter 4-6 times.
2c) Before putting in back in the computer make sure that the read-write head of the hard disk is touching the platter.

Reboot and reinstall your monitor drivers and you should be good to go.

There's no need to get a new one, you can just get a new (or old, doesn't need to be fancy) monitor and wire it up to your laptop. My friend has that set-up, the laptop essentially is treated as a keyboard with a blank screen attached to it.
