What would you say makes a good forum puppet?

Not necessarily a troll puppet, just any puppet. Or does it have to be a troll puppet to be even marginally interesting?

Do people here have puppets they post with without anybody knowing it's them? Why? Do you make your puppet's views as different from yourself as possible or does it say the same things you would say except under a different name?

What's the allure? Or isn't there any?

Poll (public, naturally) coming up.

True. But even that's only impressive when the puppet is outrageously different from the puppet master. Otherwise, it would still be kind of lame. "Oh, you don't only say the same things as that other guy, you are that other guy? Awesome!"
Yeah, not so much.

The Lost Planet had some interesting 'theme' puppets, my favorite being his mime nation. He wouldn't respond to posts with text but instead images that implied his response. I dug that.

I think themed puppets are the best way to go. I used to have a few myself that I'd whip out now and then, my two favorites being-

The Island of Monsters-this one changed interpretations now and then, initially it was that the monsters on Monster Island petitioned to be recognized as a soveirn nation in exchange for laying off Tokyo for a while (whenever people would TG me with "WAR!" if I didn't feel like responding with "What is it good for?" I would explain that my land was only reachable through The Island of Monsters, which was, of course, inhabited by giant monsters. This of course, would put them off and relieving me of the hassle of having to 'play' some sort of 'cowboys and indians' version of war on II). The other version was it was the people that lived on an island inhabited by giant monsters and the things that went through to cope.

Eternia Reborn-A friend once pointed out that Eternia in the He Man cartoons was a total wasteland and wondered why Skeletor wanted it. I thought it was becaues Skeletor really did have a better plan for Eternia. His cabinet was more enviromental, with Beastman and Merman and such. And did He Man build bridges to help farmers bring thier goods to market? No, he built DragonWalkers to help him get across chasms and he was surrounded by hawks like Man at Arms and Ram Man. So I came to the conclusion that the cartoons were just propoganda by the Sorceress, who secretly really ran Eternia, meant to smear the man of the people, Skeletor. This nation was made to be Eternia after the fall of the warmongering He Man and the rise of the populist Skeletor.

I do have a puppet nation though. Or "alternative nation". You can find it in my region...

Both those nations where created when I thought I'd play the game. Since I didn't, they died. I didn't even think of a themed nation that would effect the way I would post or something like that until The Lost Planet had to leave for a while and told us about his puppets. I haven't been able to come up with something as cool as the mime nation, so I haven't bothered.

I once entertained the notion of an Acme nation that would sell Roadrunner and Coyote style weapons and devices in the roleplaying forums, but effort vs. my precieved lack of humor on their part (I should say that I really just assumed they wouldn't have enough of a sense of humor to put up with that to get me off the effort hook more than I actually saw that they didn't have a sense of humor...) stalled it. And I managed to create the nation during a glitch, so it went away before I could photoshop the devices.

Why does people enjoy speculating so much? I mean, is it really that important? One should focus on the posts, not the poster. Like that infamous troll whose name I cannot for the life of me remember any longer, he was a moronic ass - but if he was a puppet, would it have mattered? I just ignored him in the end regardless, after all the insane crap he spewed.

It's not the puppetry that's annoying; it's the trolling.

AFAIK, that's just a technical glitch not even concerning most new posters. So unless it actually happened to happen to your little troll and unless you were planning on it committing suicide within its first 10 posts (I think that's the number of posts that have to be "moderator approved", right?) it shouldn't be a problem.
Actually, since I really can't imagine the mods to read the posts before they "auto-approve" them it shouldn't be a problem either way.

I don't use "puppets" in the normal sense of the word. Rather, I create a new primary nation--and let the previous one die out--fairly often. I like creating new nations to use because it allows me a fresh start to use the knowledge I used from my previous nations so that each time I have a slightly more refined idea of what I want to be as a debator. I ilke this one so far--but always the first few posts are hard to tell. It's usually around 100 posts or after I get into a mudfight pretty heavy that I make the change. So, ostensibly it's living and learning, but as an ulterior motive it keeps everyone on their feet and makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something each time.

I've got 4 puppets, but I never post with 'em. I did make a couple of posts with one during a glitch that had affected this nation, but that was it.

The point of having them is to try to run 'em all in different ways. But I ended up with 2 that are almost clones of this one, although I succeeded at differentiating the other 2. I don't play the game very often anymore, but when I do, I keep to the themes I have in mind.

As for why I keep them all, I just tend to hoard computer-based stuff. RL web sites, NS nations, old video games from 2001..."uninstall" and "delete" aren't words that I use often.

While it is true that JB2 doesn't say it's me in its sig, it does say it's me in its name, so I figured that was close enough to check that box.

There are at least 2 others that have died out, one that was to see what answering the issues differently would be like, and the other was going to be the one I posted in the forum with, but never did with that one, either.

I mean, HotRodia does that, but then he once said that he did it to be in debates as his "civilian" self. And of course it's obvious that he would have to let people know they're talking to a mod.

Indeed it was.

And I wasn't even very spammy, most of the time. I only started posting a couple months after my join date and for quite some time posted only a handful of posts per day, if at all.

And as for the "recognized"? Believe me, I have no illusions that, were I not one of the precious few females on here, anybody would so much as recognize me any more than "Who? Oh, yeah, I think I might have seen the name before".

Don't be an idiot. You know I think you're cool, as well as one of the more amusing posters here. The configuration of your genitals doesn't have any bearing on that. I'm sure most others think the same.

My use of puppets has been very sparing. I only really ran one, and it served a very specific purpose.

My only reason for using puppets has been to set out an agenda that people will think they can judge my position on, based on what they know about me from other posts. And - if you honestly want to set out for debate on a new thought, you sometimes need anonymity to make it balanced.

I used to have hundreds of puppets. Partly for issues, partly for nation names. I started using alts to post on the forums, but my posting style was apparently so distinct that everyone figured out it was me after a while. I eventually gave the vast majority away to other people and now have only a few I use for roleplay, issue experimentation, one in the UN, and an occasional alternate NSG identity so I can feel like a n00b again.

TRUE FACT: Czardas, the nation you all know and love me by, was originally a minor UN puppet that was never actually intended for anything special. I only started using it when I was logging in a lot more due to my UN Delegate status, to approve proposals and suchlike. That's why I have no posts before April or May 2005.

Well, never heard that one before. Why can't you just change your style under the old name?

The one constant in life is change. I like to reflect that in my nations. Actually, I love change in everything--it's so refreshing. So, I guess my nation creation policy is an online manifestation of the way I live my life. I'll spontaneously reorganize my room, wake up at a different time each morning, join a group (yeah I'm going to college) for about a semester/year, and if my position doesn't change, via elections etc., then I'll join a new group for a fresh perspective. Hell, I even change my handwriting fairly regularly. Out with the old, in with the new. Also why I supported Webb over Allen in VA senate elections; I could really care less who won, but it was time for a change. In short, change is a life philosophy--the longer you stay with something, the more it becomes ingrained and rutted, fostering certain perceptions and associating specific attributes. To answer your question (directly), I start over with a new nation because the old is associated with certain opinions, attitudes, beliefs, etc.--it gets boring. Small and dynamic, and soon as you get to get known--mostly infamously, sadly--change. I love it.
