McCain makes Presidential Run official

There will be some fun all right. My only goal in all this is to make sure nobody's still buying the "McCain is a maverick" line.

I'm in ur threadz, stealing ur OP. ;)

Meh. He's probably not going to win. I heard the other day that McCain is less popular with evangelicals than Giuliani. I say good riddance to him.

EDIT: Two armed assailants, matching the descriptions of The Nazz and Rhaomi, made off in the night with the thread's first posts. Readers are advised to exercise extreme prejudice while attempting to disentangle the conversation.

Well now the two front runners of the GOP have made it official, let the fun begin.

I think McCain has had to sacrifice a lot of the integrity that I liked about him to get this far, and will probably have to sacrifice quite a bit more in the next year and a half. Will he have enough left to appeal to me when November rolls around?

It doesn't look good. :(

Especially since it's not even this November, it's the one after that. But yeah, I felt sorry for McCain because of the way the Bush 2000 campaign trashed him in the primaries, but his recent groveling at the feet of the religious right has put me off him. Anyway, even assuming someone actually discovered a moderate or ... dare I say it? a liberal Republican, and that person became the nominee, that person would carry the GOP along with him or her, so voting that way is not an option.

On Wednesday's Late Show with David Letterman, Sen. John McCain dropped a bombshell: "The last time we were on this program... you asked me if I would come back on this show if I was going to announce," the Republican told Dave. "I am announcing that I will be a candidate for president of the United States." McCain added that his formal announcement would come in April.

Letterman went on to ask the senator if he would contemplate being veep, to which the politico responded, "In the last election, there was some conversation about me being vice president. I said, 'You know, I spent all those years in a North Vietnamese prison camp, kept in the dark, fed scraps.... Why the heck would I want to do that all over again?'" Hmm, if the POTUS thing doesn't work out, maybe McCain is Conan's successor?

Haha...he is rather funny

He's always pretty funny on The Daily Show. That earns him a pretend vote from me.

"Pre-care mode" indeed. And okay, he gets a pretend vote.

Isn't he your Senator? How's he perceived among the home folks?

What really soured me on "McCave" was his "speech" and the '04 convention. Then his knuckling under on the travesty that became the Military commissions act. I mean Habeus Corpus? Who needs it? It's only been a cornerstone of nearly every justice system since the 1200's... Sickening.

Yeah, he is. He walks on water in the rural areas, and is fairly well-liked in the more liberal areas. I think that might be changing, though.

In '04 when he was up for re-election, the ballot should have said "John McCain" and "The guy who's going to lose to John McCain." :p

I think his time passed in 2000 when the Bush group painted him as a coward. He should have taken another shot in 2004 but was too good a "party man" to take on the president. He just doesn't seem to have the boldness needed to win today.

And then the rest of them who can't raise money.

By the way, I noticed that McCain also said on Letterman that "We've wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives." (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/nation/4592595.html) When Obama said much the same thing last week, the rightwingers were outraged about the use of the word "wasted." Should I hold my breath waiting for them to be outraged this time? IOKIYAR is still in full effect, I suppose.

I back the Dems up on that one in regards to the quote. They want him to apologize and he better apologize quickly.

See, I'm on the other side of this. I think those lives were wasted in Iraq, and that both Obama and McCain were correct in their assessment. The argument against the statement seems to be that it denigrates their sacrifice. I disagree--a sacrifice can certainly be wasted, and if ever a sacrifice were wasted, this one has been, because the war--support it or not--has been ineptly managed from the very beginning, and whatever minimal good might have come out of this unnecessary war has certainly not come to fruition. Those lives were unnecessarily sacrificed, and have been wasted in pursuit of a pipe dream.

The worst part being of course that the thing actually suffering in both cases is truth.

We are, after all, wasting lives in Iraq. Trying to obfuscate that fact only leads to more lives being wasted.

This pretty much covers my feel of McCain. Though I do feel the most "liberal" Republican (if thats not an oxymoron) we will ever get is Guliani. I don't think Americans will get any better.

Well in her mind, kids play something like Grand Theft Auto and are going to go out into the world and commit the same acts they did in the game. Clearly she thinks youths are like monkeys and will copy everything they see on that glowing screen.

I love them and I hate them. My dad's a drunk and did various kinds of drugs. I grew up with them constantly yelling at eachother one day and loving eachother the next. I saw my dad beat the crap out of my mom because he found out she was cheating on him. I met the guy she was cheating on him with. I was in an offshoot of the same hotel room they were in while they fucked, and I couldn't sleep at all that night or the next. I met the son of the guy she was cheating on dad with. I almost choked him to death on numerous occasions. I was on mental autopilot for most of my childhood, never really aware of what was going on around me. Defense mechanisms. I can't believe I got to and graduated high school with the amount of depression I was in. My mom and dad recently got into a fight and out of fear of being beaten again she punched him in the face - he called the cops and she was arrested - I heard all this at about 2AM on a Saturday, and had to pick her up, take her to my apartment so she'd have somewhere to sleep for the night, then had to sneak into my parents' house and get my siblings and bring them to my place as well. They've since gotten back together and things are okay for the most part.

How does any of this affect the way I dislike Hilary Clinton, again?

Uhm ... I was kidding? About wanting to know how you feel about your parents, I mean, though you do have my sympathies.

Look, Hillary may have taken some time out to deliver an undoubtedly politically motivated rant about video games, but I daresay she's been more vocal on the war and on the Bush White House's assault on the Constitution and some of the bigger issues. All I really meant is that you ought to take a deep breath and calm down. I won't ry to persuade you to support her, because I'm not sure I support her myself, but I do think you've gone round the bend just a little on this item.

Oh for Christ's sake people, it's not about video games it's about censorship. Video games are the current scapegoat for the adult population, for they grew up without it. It's the same with movies, or music, but since those are more "established" forms of media, it's not as effective as blaming video games.

Hilary's tactics are no different than Hitler's, just on a smaller scale. Problem with Germany? Blame the Jews. Problem with America's youth? Blame video games. Both make perfect sense.
