I was just thinking about languages and was curious as to what languages NSers prefer. Personally I'm into the germanic or scandinavian languages.

Poll is made of fail for being so Euro-centric, but of those listed, the Romance one wins, to be followed by Slavic.

I suppose my language falls into the Uralic category. Since it's not usually considered good manners to vote your own, I'll say West Germanic, because I like English. It's such an easy language.

I might be wrong about this, but don't Scandinavian languages belong in the Germanic family?

Indian, or at least north and central Indian. Those Tamil folks talk too damn fast.

Though I guess Indian could be linked to Romance, as Latin and Sanskrit have a common origin.

Uh oh I'ma hafta call up my Tamil cohorts to pound you for talking trash about Tamil.

BTW Sanskrit has a common origin with English, Russian, and German too.

I haven't heard anything about that. I know that it's been shown that there are definite links between Latin and Sanskrit. Even many of the words are similar in pronunciation and meaning (duherter is the Sanskrit word for daughter, for instance.)

For those of you who did not like this poll, why don't you make your own poll? Personally, I thought it was mediocre, as the choices really were a bit limited, but not bad enough that I would say "all of these choices suck".

On the topic of language families and their origin, all of those languages are related, except for the Uralic. All the others come from a proto-indo-european language that branched out into the languages of Europe, Persia and India (the Germanic, Slavic, Romance, Sanskrit and some others).

I chose Slavic as my favourite, and my second choice would have been Uralic (those Finns really know how to make use of double letters and it looks really strange on paper, same with Hungarian with their use of silent "Z"s). My favourite group in the world is the Sintic family, which includes Chinese for their ridiculously simple grammar and tonal sounds.
