How many out their in the lonely ether of NSG play Dungeons and Dragons? If so, what is your favorite character that you've created?

I knew how to play, but we always had a hard time getting campaigns going because our DM was lazy. He was damn good at making campaigns, but we might end up waiting weeks or even a month or two to play again.

Most of my actual playing was on the PC with games like Baldur's Gate; my favorite character was probably the sorcerer I played in my third BG2 game. He was pretty high level; IIRC level 20 by the end of Shadows of Amn and 38 or 39 was where he ended by the time I beat Throne of Bhaal.

Being able to cast 9 level-9 spells made it a lot easier to defeat some of the ultra-challenging enemies in Throne of Bhaal.

My main character was a rogue halfling. She rocked. :p

I play (yes, I'm a big nerd). I think my fav. character would have to be my current one - an LG human cleric of Mayaheine - mostly because I've spent the most time building that character.

The shifter battledancer I'm playing in the next campaign may give her a run for her money, though.

I used to play, but I lost track of my group over the years.

My favourite character was a 2nd edition Thief. He was Chaotic Good with the Swashbuckler kit. But then, at level 9, he had his alignment changed to Lawful Evil by a Deck of Many Things and immediately dual-classed to Necromancer.

So then I had a Swashbuckling Necromancer who pretended to be insane in order to hide his dual-classing from the party (they would have been pissed both that he was evil and that the party's only Thief couldn't pick locks anymore). Once his Necromancer level was high enough and his reputation as a madman was fully established, he could then resume his swashbuckling ways with a touch of animated dead thrown in.

Nothing buckles my swash like fresh zombies.

D&D = Estra. a Half Wolf/Half Bear DM creation. telepathy, natural body armor, Tracking, and trap sensing abilities.

AD&D = Tasha Moonblade Elven Rogue/Illusionist (CN), sent in by me (DM) to knock big headed players down to size. (left one player naked in his room... without any form of covering... while she pawned his items for gold.)

AD&D 2nd Edition = Elania Moonblade (CG). Elven Rogue Tasha's Daughter. Moonshaped scar recieved when she tried to steal from a Wizard. He "calls (Summons)" her through the scar whenever he has a 'job' for her.

D&D 3rd Edition = Kaelynn Avonlea (CG). Elven Ranger. is brought closer to death by her party members more often than by the monsters they face... and DM wonders why she wants to put Humans as her favored enemy.

It's been years since I played, but I still have a couple of favorite characters from back in the 2nd Edition days. One was Fergus the Druid, who had an intelligence of 8 and a wisdom of 18. That's right, he was Forrest Gump in the woods.

The other was Zebediah, a ranger of the seeker kit. He had quite a resume: his full name, with titles he acquired over the course of his adventures, was "Zebediah of Hillside, Seeker of the Wolf of Suki, Companion of the Spear, and Harbinger of the Golden Age of Necromancy". (He wasn't too thrilled about that last bit, BTW, but when you're mentioned in a prophecy, what can you do?)

Been playing since I was about 12, which I guess means I've been playing for about 20 years.

Excuse me while I go cry for a bit...

...okay... so I spent most of my time DM'ing, but my favourite character is my Chaotic-Good Fighter/Rogue in my friend's forgotten realms campaign.

Lot's of social life wasted there, let me tell ya.

I play 3.5, and to be honest, I have two favorite characters. The first (more from a diabolical genius perspective) was actually a sidekick to a main character gained through the leadership feat. His name was Matt Heathertoes, and he was a halfling rogue-paladin multiclass. Essentially, he was a fairly skilled if completely ruthless rogue who had a Road-to-Damascus moment and became an acolyte of the halfling goddess and a force for good in the world. I never had much of a chance to flesh out his personality, but combat-wise, he was both hilarious and deadly, primarily because I put feats on him that let him use a full-size two-hander sword. So people would laugh when they heard the description of a three-foot tall halfling wielding a six-foot long sword right up until he tumbled behind them and whacked them for sixty points of damage. He couldn't be flanked, he could get out of the way of most spells, and he was immune to fear and had formidible saving throws, which made him really, really difficult to take down.

The best character overall that I had was probably Mace, a traditional dwarven fighter-cleric combo, prestiged out to include some dwarven defender and templar. The classic tankadin who could stand and deliver with the best of them, I especially liked him primarily because unlike most dwarves, he wasn't especially surly, just fumbling in his amiability. So he'd be the first to comment about, for instance, how the wood nymphs had a fire mage to thank for their continued existence. He was a blast to fight to with and hilarious to play with.

I've got all the core rule books for 3 and 3.5, many a grade 12 lunch was spent playing DnD. :D

Some past characters, Erowid the Viking, Asan a human psionic fighter and Orvelve the never lived underground a day in his life drow.

Yes, I play D&D. I also DM.

My favorite character would probably be a Swashbuckler/Rogue I made shortly after 3.5 rolled out. I'd always been a big fan of the Duelist Prestige Class in 3.0 and wanted to see how much of it had been preserved in the Swashbuckler (which is essentially a 20-level extension of the Duelist).

It'd probably be because of all my characters he was the one with the most developed backstory. He was the son of a nobleman in our homebrew world, whose family had been viciously slaughtered by a rival House while he was very young, and devoted his life to avenging his family.

At the moment, no... I tried for a play-by-post game recently, but apparently the person who ran it didn't like my character.

My favorite character I've created is probably Mikrel Proudanin; in essence, a successful attempt to combine the archetypes of a chaotic good paladin and an old, powerful wizard. Unfortunately, I was experimenting with the epic-level rules at the time, so I created him at fifty-first level and gave him a sixty hit dice brass dragon companion named Dulmanisis... not exactly suitable for ordinary play.

My favorite character was named Ozyo. He was a human fighter who had a serious gambling addiction, a low Constitution score, and was pretty good with the Daikyu (in that campaign a Daikyu was treated as a composite longbow but was also an exotic weapon).

He had a really cool mount that my DM invented. It was pretty much a flightless bird so it was sort of like riding a bigger, cooler emu or ostritch.

Never played the PnP game, but I've played a computer game called Neverwinter Nights which uses a slighty modified version of the rules.

My most effective character was a human with a mixture of Paladin and Red Dragon Disciple (and a few sorceror levels, because you need them to become a RDD).
He (eventually) got immunity to disease and fear from being a Paladin and immunity to fire, sleep and paralysis from being a RDD.

In Neverwinter Nights 2, I reinvented him as an Aasimar - giving him acid, cold and electric resistance.

Good to know that the NSG is filled with D&D types. As for my favorite character, that would have to go with a new character I've recently been roleplaying. He is a human Level 4 Fighter/Level 2 Psychic Warrior named "Ash" (as in Ash from Evil Dead and Army of Darkness). So far, he's turned into an interesting alter ego.

We play with an instant criticical house rule (you can take a hit to your attack and aim at a targets neck for an instant decapitation on success). So far, he's collected a small pile of skulls. ;)

I’m more of a dungeon crawler man. Was weaned on Games Workshop games, back in the good ol’ days of Blood Bowl, Necromunda and, most importantly, Warhammer Quest.

Quest got me into roleplaying, and I played a couple campaigns of Vampire: The Masquerade before descending into the pit of student poorness. These days, I’m mostly playing my old GW games, as well as non-rpg games like Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan. I’ve not got many mates up for anything more in-character than a couple of deeps of Quest, but I’d love to get stuck into some real roleplaying, especially D&D.

Nearly bought the 3.5 Players Manual the other day.

Any tips for a n00b? Versions, etc. I know there’s a RP club at my uni.

Used to play a lot during college years. My group waned and I have a rather succesful career now that occupy most of my time. (Yes, even when I am in NS I am busy!, or supposed to be)

Favourite?, several, from several different systems. Aliria Dihyru, a shy but determined and talented elven wizard, regarding D&D. The chronicle lasted for years, and I was able to make all the way from level 1 to 20, although I bit the dust once. Being the fragile but rather powerful elven wizard, and also the only female playing both inside and outside of character, it was funny to see the entire party placing themselves in the line of fire to protect me. I even wished. Yeah, wished!.

Honorable mentions goes to Valentina Castillo, a rather elegant Lasombra schemer from Vampire: The Masquerade, Yogo Kageshi, a Scorpion Shugenja in the Legend of the Five Rings, and Farisel, a dashing elven outrider from Warhammer RPG.

I currently am the DM of a 1st Edition game. I even created a website and a computer program to calculate XP and post it for the players to retrieve it after each game. We even have a message board.

But back in High School I played a 2nd Edition Paladin most of the time.

Here's an interesting question that occurred to me... When you guys play, are your characters the same sex as you, or opposite, or do you mix it up? My D&D characters were all male, but I knew a couple guys that occasionally played a female.

It depends. We generally try and have a few female characters in the group, and switch off who rolls one every time we roll new characters.
I've never played a female D&D character yet, but I've played female characters in other RPGs (Deadlands, Marvel Unlimited, Vampire).

I can't imagine a good DM allowng you to do much with 400 lb. on your back, or fail to account for the mass of gold (each coin should weight 1 troy ounce, so 10 coins to a pound). Once a party has been adventuring for a few months it probably has a wagon train filled with equipment following it around, because you couldn't possibly carry it all.

I once played in a group where we has an entire wagon just for hauling our extra swords (other weapons were on a different wagon - this one was just swords).

I don't know about the new rules, but the old rules gave specific limits to how much you could carry basedo n how you were trying to carry it. There was even a limit to how much gear you could hold above your head (Max Press) if you were trying to cross a river or something. But that was back when your gear was constantly being destroyed because it had to make saving throws against almost everything that happened to it.

Of course. Plus, DMs have discretion to limit capactiy further based on the size and shape of your equipment. Even if it's not that heavy, you can't carry a wooden table and swing a broadsword at the same time.

I've always preferred Bags of Holding.

Though that's largely because we generally used the "If it's what you're looking for, it's at the top of the bag" rule for BoH, which is generally a rule that specifically only applies to Heyward's.

Also because I'm a spellcaster, and so therefore largely don't give a shite how long it takes to pull something out of the bag.

I have been DM'ing a campaign for 4+ years now, so most of my favorite characters are actually NPC's. But when I was playing, my favorite character was a female human evoker 13 named Irulan. She was something of a pyromaniac and had just made up a set of +1 spell storing returning distance shurikens.
