A woman was recently tricked by geese into stabbing her granddaughter to death and was facing the death penalty. Now she's been found not guilty for reason of insanity. Nobody has announced any plans to try to identify the guilty geese and bring them to justice though. Fucking geese always get away with it.

Good for her. I guess.

I caught a bit of day time tv when I was off sick recently. I saw one programme where a woman claimed a psychic horse had told her to marry a complete stranger.
Chimps with spears, evil geese and matchmaking horses - are the animals finally rising up to stomp humanity under paw?

because people can't simply be insane and therefore should always get death penalty when they commit a murder?

Take my word for it; psychiatric hospitals aren't all they are cracked up to be. Many prisons are nicer. :p

I've never understood the "defence by insanity", but then I'm not sure I really believe in "justice" and "punishment" - I just think criminals should be prevented from harming the public further. If that's accomplished by locking them up, what does it matter if you call it a jail or a lunatic asylum?

It depends on the hospital, and it depends on what they diagnose you with, and what drugs they use on you.
Sure, repeated ECT and thorazine is no fun. But there are other treatments.

*sigh*
May I suggest you read up on it then? I'll give you some hints: Criminal behaviour caused by an illness, and crimes perpretated by choice. Punishment as a tool to stop crime. Punishment ineffective to stop acts caused by illness. Release contingent on the disease being treated, unlike jail time.

the woman probably just got a bit down, ended up falling into a bad flock, you know how those gaggles are, no planing, just winging it from place to place, putting things on their bills.

They were probably just honked off. If it had been ducks they would have quacked up while chickens would have just gone off like a bunch of cackling hens.

Dude, she thought geese were telling her to do things. She was crazy. It's not like she just goes around killing babies for their fine, soft skins which can be sewn into lovely gowns.

WTF would that accomplish ... deter other people who think geese tell them to do shit?
Please if they are that fucking gone there is no amount of punishment that will make one bit of difference
Court records showed she had been admitted to hospitals for psychiatric care at least six times in 2005, including six weeks before the slaying.

Unless the geese were telling her to make the kid stop crying, it's quite likely that she killed the baby for a rational reason unrelated to her being batshit insane.

So, there are rational reasons for killing a baby that won't stop crying?
OK, this I have to hear. Please list them. Numbers are optional but encouraged.
And I'm willing to take "It was a typo" for an answer. In fact, I really, really hope it's a typo. Or else that the word "rational" doesn't mean what you think it means.

"Admitted to hospitals for psychiatric care" =/= "particularly likely to stab babies." I have been admitted to hospitals for psychiatric care, and I'm entirely sane and not in the least bit violent. I assure you that I can be trusted not to murder people.
Now, unlike me, this woman obviously is not entirely sane, but there's nothing in the article to suggest a history of violence, and thus no particular reason to believe her son or daughter would think that she might be a danger to the child.
