That line and his countless works made him wellknown all around the world.

Today, Johnny Cash would have turned 75.

Whereever you are, Johnny, happy birthday, and a loud boom-chicka-boom from me!

Okay, now I shall take you back a looong way in time:

I Walk The Line 1959 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krVACUbciJE) This is the very song that got me listen to Mr. Cash.

"History lesson, young folks..." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7K4jH7NqUw) The song sure didn't lose anything over the years!

The day Johnny passed away, the news show heute journal ("today journal") on the 2nd public broadcasting station (ZDF) announced that he was dead - and then, to my big surprise, played the whole music video instead of giving a résumé of his life and achievements.
It had never happened before that a news show plays a music video - but it was so fitting to the situation, and one could tell that everyone had a lump in their throat and tears in their eyes when they announced the weather forecast...

Johnny Cash - Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go)

Hope you enjoy the songs - and crank up the volume!

A big thumbs up. I woke up this morning wearing my favorite Cash T-shirt....

(Oh, and you'd best believe I saw it in the theater! My dad (a bigger Cash than me) and I drove over an hour to do so last when I was home at Xmas 2005/6.)

I thought this was going to be about these guys:
http://www.highlightzone.de/film/film_bilder/men_in_black_2_film.jpg

That'd make it a tribute to men in black, not to The Man in Black.

And as GN said, Big John Cash pwns MIB.

I'd be hard pressed and hell bound to name a favorite, so instead, I'll toss out this bit that seems appropriate today:

So we sadly sang for them our last song
And reluctantly we said so long
We did our best to let them know that we cared
for every last one of them over there
Whether we belonged over there or not
somebody loves them and needs them

Well now that's about all there is to tell
about our little trip and the livin' hell
and if I ever go back over there again
I hope there's none of our boys to sing for
I hope this ol' war's over with and they're all back home
To stay in peace

I tip my hat to you! I only have black shirts, but not a single JC T-shirt.

I have to admit that I missed it in the theaters - then again, I prefer watching movies like that in the original and not dubbed. Some movies lose their - how do I put it? - spirit in translation, and especially this one with its accents would've done so.
But I got it on DVD as soon as it came out.

My father had the Live At San Quentin on vinyl (which I have now) and I only mentioned Walk The Line as my favorite because it's the one that started it all for me...
With a repertoire as huge as Johnny's it really is hard to narrow it down to only one song.

Ah, okay.
Hurt is a great song when done by him, and the video really is a masterpiece.

There’s better Cash songs, and the NIN original is a much more accomplished tune; especially the Hurt (Live) version on Further Down The Spiral.

I saw it when I was back in the States. If I hadn't I'd have seen it here, as Japanese theaters fortunately usually show US movies with subtitles.

Heh. Sounds real familiar. I grew up listening to my dad's collection of Johnny Cash, Willie, and the other outlaws. It was last Xmas that I gave him a CD that I intuited he'd like - a collection of rare Country that included an old hit by Bobby Helms - "Fraulein". Unbeknownst to me that was his "favorite song when he was "running around and driving up to Oklahoma to drink beer" back in the late 50s. There's not a lot sweeter than taking your old man back to the pleasures of his youth...

Johnny Cash...an inspiration to generations of punk bands.

Among other great things. A donation to SOS Children's Villages (one of the fine man's favorite charities) would be appropriate on today, if one is so inclined.

Oh, and I have a (crazy?) theory that the music of Johnny Cash and the other anti-Nashville-Sound Country Outlaws is, at it's roots, rather closely related to the early Punk movement. My little bro, the music prof who likes both punk and C/W as well (runs in the family, eh?), tells me there's doctoral gold in that theory...

Good one, too.

Did you know that when Johnny "Phoenix" Cash tears apart the hotel room and yanks the sink off the wall, that wasn't in the script? :D

I don’t care much for NIN. Johnny Cash is so much better.
Don’t get me wrong, Cash is the man. But the original of that particular song is better than the cover, IMHO.

Just imagine the conversation:

“Hey, Trent. Someone wants to cover Hurt.”

“Who?”

"Johnny Fucking Cash."

How cool'd that be?

Indeed.

And I thought his cover of Tom Petty's "Southern Accents" was just as sweet.

I guess that's where we'll have to agree to disagree, for IMHO, it ain't better. Johnny's voice carries so much more - besides, I rather buy the lyrics when he sings them... And I prefer his minimalistic approach on playing the song, too.

But...
Just imagine the conversation:

...that would be cool to no end. I bet they first thought someone was having them on.

After listening to Johnny Cash - Southern Accents (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8kNhMu6FZE) I will now establish the following:

Voice ranges for male singers:

Sopranist
Countertenor
Alto
Tenor
Baritenor
Baritone
Bass-baritone
Bass
Cash

Me & my girlfriend watched Walk the Line the other day. She said near the end "Is Cash dead now? I hope he's dead". She hadn't really heard any of his music and just saw a drug addict who bailed out on his wife and kids.

Reminds me of the first time my last Japanese girlfriend heard George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" . When the song came to the titular line, she said "Oh, good!"

I stopped it and went through it again, with me explaining the song. When we got to that line the second time, she decided "he" was just stupid. :(

(For those who don't know the song, that line's when "he" dies. And do yourself a favor and give the song a good listen.)

I believe I don't like your girlfriend... Hope you set her straight!!!
