If the recipient has a significant other, it usually works to buy something the significant other is going to hate.

Just go to the gadget shop and buy pretty much anything in there, its all good.

my birthday was last friday, and my gf made me a rurouni kenshin teddy bear. and when i mean made, i mean, hand-sewed using her own fabrics etc. now, i don't know if anyone is interested in anime, but this was by far the most thoughtful gift i can remember receiving from anyone.

beer/money (depends on who you're buying it for though, i always like to get money from people that don't really know me, instead of something i can't use)/something funny (because fun > no fun).

Books, music, movies, pictures, paintings...
