Satellite TV

Right now I have cable TV, but I've been considering switching to Satellite because I'm switching my internet to the same company, and it would be simplest to have Phone, cell phone, TV, and internet from the same company. But I have never used a satellite TV before, and I was curious... how does it work? Do you get reception all the time? Is it better or worse than cable? I don't actually know anyone with satellite TV, but someone on here must have it... Thanks!

Satellite TV's quality is inversely proportional to the amount of rainstorms.

Lots of rainstorms= piss poor
None= normal/good

Satellite TV is man's greatest invention. Better than fire, better than agriculture, better than porn.

You get all the channels you would get from digital cable, but broadcast in several timezones. You almost never have to go "Fuck, do I watch Hockey Night in Canada, or the Daily Show?" You watch both.

I much prefer satellite. Any storm thats been strong enough to knock out my connection usually takes my power at the same time or slightly afterwards.

You get reception at any time, except in extremely windy/rainy weather, and lightning, and even then it's knocked out for only a few minutes. :) I think it's better than cable, mainly because you can hook local channels up to it and see 500 other channels, whereas with cable you don't get 500 channels.

Sure you do. Digital Cable, with DVR and On Demand, PWNS all.

I'm fond of mine, but the thing to have is the DVR. Television of any kind without the DVR is teh suck.

I don't think Satellite would be very good where I live due to all the snow. My experiences with satellite TV have been mostly bad.

Get that on satellite too. And down here in hurricane land, you get your television back as soon as you have power (or immediately if you have a generator), whereas you have to wait for cable to be back on, and that's the last priority of all.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! I think I'm going to go for it, but I have one more question...

How hard is it to set up? Like can I use existing coaxial connections to connect my TVs to the receptors, and then how do I connect the receptors to the satellite? I've tried to find it on Google, but nowhere had the full setup instructions for a satellite system, at least not that I could find.

Same difference, it's America.

It's like that "scary stories from the future" thing from FairlyOdd Parents: "in the future there will be 500 channels... BUT NOTHING TO WATCH!"

:p

Yep, after Hurricane Isabel we got TV almost instantl after the hurricane passed. :)

Like I said, satelite reception is good unless you've got 50 mph+ winds or a ton of lightning, and even in those case satelite's only out for a while.

Of course, not being able to watch TV is no loss for me...

i live in the desert. the sat only goes out when it rains very hard. i also had to go brush off a bit of snow that was interfering with reception a couple times.

i have all local stations, all the good channels, 3 receivers, but no premium movie channels. it costs me $71/month. oh yeah i dont have a dvr but i wish i did. i highly recommend it.

i have a dish system, its hooked up locally and the service was excellent.

i guess id go with whichever gives you the best price (but i would only go with cable if its digital cable).

I miss the satalite never had any issues with the TV, though the internet blew...

The biggest draw I think to Sat TV in the US is it is easy to pirate. I have heard some say up to 25% of the viewers are pirates. It is actually fairly easy to pirate it with a FTA box. Sites such as the FTA site Hashhu.c are good reading on the subject.

It does. It is not a new episode, but it does.

Sattelite is not the best when you are in the middle of a severe storm (when you really WANT to see whats going on). I ghave had sattelite for 3 years and that is the only thing that kills me about it. Other than that-to me anyways- it's just like cable (cable companies nowadays have the same little perks as sattelite).
