Strangest Song You've Ever Heard

Kinda Sensible people

What is the strangest song you've ever had the pleasure (or displeasure) of hearing? All forms of music, be they classical, folk, rock, or rap are allowed.

For me, Pandora just tossed me a song entitled "Queen of the night" by Steve Vai. It sounds fairly standard for metal titles, so I was shocked when I heard the actual song.

The song is a metal version of The Queen of the Night's Aria (http://youtube.com/watch?v=CqBW_9OjhlA) from The Magic Flute. It was well performed, I admit, but the concept was very strange.

So. What is the strangest song you've ever heard?

"Special Cal" by Special Cal - What my literally mildly retarded neighbor called himself when he made a rap song that was recorded and put online by another neighbor of mine. It's far too bad "Special Cal's" mom called the other kid's mom and made him take it down. The song was the most ridculous I've ever heard, rap or not.

Depends on what you consider weird, really. I've punished myself with a wide variety of "weird" music that makes some of the suggestions so far seem normal. :P

I'll be the first to mention Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, though.

But the Shaggs, the Butthole Surfers, Converge, Melt Banana, Diamanda Galas, Propergol, SunnO))), Khanate, Earth, Sleep, etc. etc. should be mentioned at some stage. (but the weirdness factor depends on your personal sensibilities...I mean, you may not find 60 minute instrumental metal songs that odd.)

Well, there's "I'm Sad the Goat Just Died Today" by the Frogs.

There's every single song by Wesley Willis.

On the other end of the quality scale, there's Glass's brilliant but undeniably weird "Einstein on the Beach."

And, of course, any discussion of strange music would be incomplete if it didn't involve John Cage. It's hard to get much stranger than 4'33'' or As Slow As Possible.

[Intro - talking]
Ha hee!, hee!
Why Mix-A-Lot cotton picker you freak skinnin the cats
Why don't you bring the beat on in here, cotton picker so I can get down
(*yelling*)
Put it up
That's the way I like it there Mix-A-Lot
Hey Mix-A-Lot, picks me up cotton picker
Picks me up Mix-A-Lot

[Break]
Now everybody's rappin 'bout
Everybody's rappin 'bout
Ever - (*repeated*)

[Verse 1]
Now everybody's rappin 'bout "where's their line?"
I'm gonna bust me a brand new rhyme
Girlfriend's down and you stomped her freak
Shake your hips and act conceit
Throw your head high in the air
Grab your partner's derriere
Fellas in the cut, I know you must be trippin
My boy's got them there home girl's quippin
Now grab your partner, take a bow
If you can't dance, I'll tell you how
Wave your hands and take two steps
Grab your hips and slide to the left
Get all in your partner's face
Swerve to the side and show your lace
If your a freak then let it show
And grab your partner doshy-do (do, do ...)

[Verse 2]
Now if you think your partner's fine
Grab her where the sun don't shine
If you can't dance, then tap your toes
If your stuffed up, turn up your nose
Wave your hands from side to side
Lean to the left and take a slide
Other's DJs know their no match
Just look to the stage and the song's that scratched

(*scratching*)
[Male voice - talking]
Rock me babe - 4X

[Verse 3]
Freaks on the left and freaks on the right
Grab your partner, hold him tight
Put your hands in his Levi's
Hold his rear while he grips your thighs
The more you dance, the more I rap
The big fat beat makes your toes tap
Glee can, no can, hang with this
All you freaks give your man a kiss (look good)

[Break] - 4X
My beats are icky
That why I'm Swass

[Break - talking]
Beat box
Oh Mix-A-Lot I'm feelin it now, cotton picker
YEEEE-HA!

[Verse 4]
Now everybody on the floor clap your hands
Smoke to the beat of the one man band
Mix-A-Lot brings on the drum machine
The bass line riff is "oh, so mean"
Mix-A-Lot make a jam in his room
With a full tape recorder you can bust jams too
Throw your partner across your thigh
Tickle her fast, until she starts to cry
Whip her to the left, whip her to the right
But don't whip her to hard cause her jeans are tight (look good)

[Chorus]
Get your hands off that girl, boy
Seattle rocks
(to the sq, to the sq, to the sq, to the Square Dance Rap)
L.A. rocks
(to the sq, to the sq, to the sq, to the sq, to the Square Dance Rap)
Miami rocks

(to the, to, to, to the Square Dance Rap)
London, England rocks
(to the sq, to the sq, to the Square Dance Rap)
To the Square Dance Rap, hot damn

[Outro - talking]
Hey Mix-A-Lot, what in the world is that noise cotton picker?
Sound like Grand Ole Opry
Hear what I say Mix-A-Lot, say sound like Grand Ole Opry cotton picker
Now before we end this filthy cut, we got a few things we have to say
To the home girls sprung on the hum drum beat, check out Sir Mix-A-Lot Ray
His style is fresh, so clean and new, he pulls so many tricks
If you give him ten bucks and a brand new tape, he'll put you in the mix
A haha, hey Mix-A-Lot I caught you that time, cotton picker

[Break]
My beats are icky ... (*drums play until fade*)

Careful with that axe, Eugene- Pink Floyd
Pretty much what the title implies: A song about an axe murder. Long instrumental building to the whispered title and a crescendo of screaming.

Or the Merzsuite by Tonio K
Part 1: the lyrics are mostly, "fut, fut, fut, yes, I am stupid"
Part 2: in french, it translates (if my high school french is at all reliable) to something like, "I am a suitcase, open and empty"
Part 3: the lyrics are mostly, "I don't know"

Anything by Ween (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ween)...but my favorites:

Why they wanna see my spine mommy?
Why they wanna see my spine?
It's gonna hurt again mommy
Much worse than last time
Am I gonna see God, mommy?
Am I gonna die?
It really hurts mommy!
Am I gonna die?
Smile on mighty Jesus
Spinal Meningitis got me down

I'm feelin' greasy mommy
Please don't let me die
Stinky vaseline mommy!
Please don't let me die
Am I gonna see God, mommy?
Am I gonna die?
It really hurts mommy!
Am I gonna die?
Smile on mighty Jesus
Spinal Meningitis got me down

The B-side to Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake by the Small Faces.

Six songs built around the following narrative, neatly summed up by Wikipedia:

'When Stan looks up in the sky and sees only half the moon, he sets out on a quest to search for the missing half. Along the way he saves a fly from starvation, and in gratitude the insect tells him of someone who can answer his question and also tell him the philosophy of life itself. With his magic power Stan intones, "If all the flies were one fly, what a great enormous fly-follolloper that would bold," and the fly grows to gigantic proportions. Seated on the giant fly's back Stan takes a psychedelic journey to the cave of Mad John the hermit, who explains that the moon's disappearance is only temporary, and demonstrates by pointing out that Stan has spent so long on his quest that the moon is now full again. He then sings Stan a cheerful song about the meaning of life.'

In case anyone is in any doubt, yes they were on LSD.

Anything by Weird Al.

Cuz.... y'know, he's... weird...

Weird Al's pretty tame.

Frank Zappa was the king of weird. Him and John Cage, but for completely different reasons. Miles Davis' album Bitches' Brew was weird in a really, really good way. Mars Volta albums, since trying to cut them up into "songs" is kinda artificial anyway. "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2" from the Flaming Lips album. It's like anime meets psychedelia meets art-pop, a lot of fun, but not as weird-weird as most of the above. +/- (the piece, not the band): the sheet music consists of a set of pluses and minuses; at each plus, the musicians increase dynamic, pitch, tempo, etc. at random. At each minus, the musicians decrease some aspect of their playing. It was written by some Japanese composer, following in the footsteps of John Cage. There was also this one album of jazz standards that were deliberately performed as badly as possible, but I can't remember the artists...

Strangest cover I ever heard was on I'm Sorry I haven't a clue (a bbc radio show) where there is a game called one song to the tune of another. Basically these two guys did 'Girlfriend in a Coma' by the Smiths to the tune of 'Tiptoe through the Tulips'. Most amusing.

Anyway, the only time I've been actually freaked out by music was in Scotland this February. We were driving through this forest at about one in the morning, and stopped in a lay-by for a loo break. Car is parked with no lights, in a dank old forest, and us all standing there in a line staring into the mossy trees whilst relieving ourselves. We'd left the music on, and this came on...

Most unexpected strange song I ever heard was the 'B' side of an old Pat Boone 45 rpm single. A song titled 'Speedy Gonzales'. yeh, I found that site too while researching the scale. I think my brain has gotten more used to the sound of it now, so it doesn't sound nearly as bizarre and "dissonant" as it did at first. Infact I'm not sure why more people don't make music using the BP scale :p octaves are just so boring.

i would have to say one i haven't heard yet because i'm always looking for strainger ones.

unfortunately i seldom remember the name of the song or the artist when i hear one.

i do like "only the strainge survive", used as a theme for "quark, straingeness and charm". and one of my favorites all arround, strainge or otherwise, would be owl song, by, or on, i'm not sure which, gemini wolf, the nophi mix.

of course i like luxumberger's "faire at e" (for something ferret-y)

=^^=
.../\...

well i did just think of a couple of more specific examples; micro-tonal bach, and something called a yoddle rapp or rapp yoddle, i think i found on sounddogs. i also really like modal keys, especial, for some reason f-natural mixolydian.

there really are so many different kinds of ways of being strainge though, it's hard for me to remember what i might have heard to be my favorites of each of them. i think i might actualy have threnody.

there's a cool site called oddinstruments.com or something like that, with samples and links that's pretty good.

and there's some composer i stummbled accross who has a micro-nation that his music is, in a sense of.

oh, for strainge, yah, i just remembered the 'prime time sublime orchestra', and their 'a day in the life of a micro-organizm'. bathory-kitz's rat guiser, and biosphere's microtunneling.

and of course for stinkers there's "what did your doggie doo doo", and "low stool volume".

hendrix and zappa of course both did some solidly strainge sounding things, but they were actualy popular in their day.

Anything off the last Scott Walker album. So demented that I couldn't get into it, and that's a lot of demented.

Edit: he he he, I'm putting it on again.
