College!?

So, I'm a high school freshman, just turned 15. It's another three or four years before I go to college.

So why am I getting college admissions stuff so early? Surely if the admissions people could get my address, they would also find out that I was a high school freshman? Am I uber-smart, or are people forcing all the college-decision pressure on us way early?

They like to try to spam you for as long as possible. If you took a test (SAT, PSAT, AP, or another College Board test), registered with College Board, or anything of the sort, they'll spam you until you're a Freshman in college. I'm still getting spam from colleges, and I've already applied everywhere I'm gonna apply.

Heh, I don't know what to tell you. I certainly didn't get any information from colleges in 9th grade. I got to wait until 11th grade when my school let me attend the college convention that came to the school. I had to send in a request to get info about any colleges. Certainly no schools took the initiative and sent me any information before.

Well, I deeply tied with a corporation at 15-16 (took some effort). Since then it gave me only benefits, from well overpaid part-time work while in college and extra education to jumpstarting at work about four years ahead of normal PhD level.
BTW, that part-time work in college was mostly getting that extra education.

Just decide where you're going to work and in which role, then get in touch with the corp, and study what you need.

College offers undergraduate degrees only. University offers graduate degrees as well.

The College Board is one of the great forces of evil in the world and must be stopped. They ended up putting me through so much unnecessary, expensive busywork to get into college, even though I ended up scoring really well on my SAT. But no, it's not that odd to be bombarded by colleges. I remember receiving a phone call a day from this one college for about a week asking me if I was absolutely sure I didn't want to go there, despite the facts that a) I had already accepted someplace else, b) they were on the opposite corner of the country from me, and c) they weren't that impressive a college in my opinion.

In the United States, at least.

In Australia there are private colleges which generally offer qualifications below a bachelor's degree from a real university, sometimes equivalent to a TAFE (institute of Technical and Further Education) qualification.

Otherwise, you go straight from high school to University, without a step called college.

The meaning is confused further by the presence at University campuses of private "colleges" which are primarily residential.

UK is similar I believe.

What's the statistics where med school students, on average, end up owing $100,000 by the time they graduate >.<

Which is why I'm not considering med school.

wow that sucks a lot, here 'med school' (it's not really a seperate school) costs about € 2000 a year (probably even less, but it gets a lot more expensive if you rent a room to be closer to school). and university is considered quite expensive here.

Right now there is a conflict in my house: does my mother get another job (forfeiting scholarships or grants) or stay unemployed and get more money for college?

I went to a college that cost 35k a year. Now I got to a school that costs 8k a year, and I'm learning more now.

Nah. If I'm going to wind up owing $100,000 in med school, I'd just have to say there's going to be icy cold intruments and you're jsut going to have to deal with them. :(

My friend still gets spammed with colleges and we are seniors in college. He sent his SAT to the first 3 colleges on the list which were two Alaskan unis and some religious school in Montana. I guess they dont get many people interested in them.

I'd be happy to get into and graduate medical school with even $200k in debt... since you can pay it off within a handful of years after you finish residency...

My daughter is in the middle of getting her Master's degree right now, so it'll be some time before she has to start worrying about paying off loans, but she's been getting loan consolidation spam since the middle of her junior year.

I bought a house and have been getting refi spam, even though I don't have a mortgage.

It's a fact of life.

yeah, that's normal. it doesn't mean anything. it's usually from crappy private schools who have money but need kids so they advertise like crazy.

once you pass admissions decision time, they'll stop coming-ish. i got an application from quest university in canada the other day. usually that's just from the desperate ones.

don't worry, it really doesn't mean anything. you don't have to make any real decisions until application time during senior year. but if you just screw off you wont have any decisions to make so it does mean something i guess.

If they go into private practice maybe, but even still 100k is a hefty sum of change.

Yeah, really. I'm still getting loan consolidation spam, even though I've already consolidated my loans. *shakes fist at the universe* Hear that? I've already done it!!!

*ahem* But yeah Pancake, schools love to send you stuff. I was getting housing applications and stuff from one school, months after I sent them my letter stating I'd already enrolled at another one. I was like, uhh... you know I'm not going to your school right? So you don't need to send me your housing forms? :p

I started getting college spam about 8th grade, I think it's because I took the SAT........maybe.

i don't get this "anyone can get in", here everybody can get in as long as they registered in time. and there aren't really any universities wich are better than the other (exept the one you go, wich is the best )

and again, what's bad with partying? if there is an interesting student-life after school that is considered as a good point here.

No, really - it's a terrible school. Unless you go for Music or Medical (because they're the only public programs in the state), you're an idiot.

Back to Wilmington - Wilmington tried to boost itself up, and they've been trying something hard, but they're turning into a party school as well. Mainly because people who would have otherwise had gone to ECU go there because it looks more legitimate. Plus, you're basing your college decision on a creative writing course? You don't think every other college in the state has creative writing courses?

Trust me, if you're going for public schools (which are excellent choices, nothing wrong whatsoever with them), go for NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, or UNC Charlotte. Three best public schools in the state, right there. Charlotte's got Liberal Arts and Engineering as well, so you get NC State and Chapel Hill at the same time.

Well things are different here. I don't think anyone can take the leaving early.
