Eastern Europe/Greece/Italy

Basically, having finished my A levels in late June, I will then be travelling through Poland, THE CZECH REPUBLIC, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy and Greece for a month, and, given that most people on NSG seem well travelled enough, I thought I'd ask for general opinions, and places to avoid and visit, and, on the off chance that somebody has done the same, advice. Much love:)

There is no such thign as Czechoslovakia. It is the name of a former country that has since split into two. Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Don't be such an arse. The meaning was absolutely plainly and manifestly fucking obvious, or do you enjoyt being an insufferable pedant?

Your level of knowledge about the place you plan to visit worries me. The Czechs and Slovaks are two different people with different values and different opinions. They are separate countries for a reason. They didn't like being one country. When you talk about the Czech Republic and you call them Czechoslovakia insults both them and Slovakians.

The point isn't whether i could or couldn't tell what you were talking about. The point is there is a difference between Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. It is kind of the equivalent of talking about the Republic of Ireland but calling it the British Empire.

No it's not. I sincerely doubt anything worries you except being an objectionable pedant. Does a typo really merit the above?

In any case, do not lecture me about Britain dickhead.

considering your name is Australia and the USA, i have a vague feeling you are from one of those countries. You don't seem...nice enough to be an Australian. So i'm stuck with American. In which case, don't talk about things you wouldnt understand...

Anyway, To Chris,

Greece is a very nice place, you should try to spend as much time there as possible :)
I say, go to Mykonos, as youve finished your A levels im sure youll find some girls on the warm beaches there :p
but anyway its a matter of opinion, you might not like it...

Sounds good.:D

If we ever get to Greece that is....;)

Calm down, you two. The guy raised a perfectly valid point, and hardly one that warranted such a response.

Yes it did. He is an arse of the first order, since he knew full well what the post actually meant, and simply picked up on a typo to attempt to appear informed, instead of being of any help.

Anyhoo, isn't it nice when Jolt makes you play hunt the newest post?:D

Yes, I happen to be from Boston. And just because i am an American does not mean i know nothing about the world outside my own borders. I know enough about European history to know there is a big difference between Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic.

It is the same as the former Yugoslavia or the former Soviet Union. You wouldn't refer to Croatia as Yugoslavia, and you wouldn't refer to Ukraine as the USSR. It is basic geographical, political and historical knowledge.

And as for the blessed Chris, don't insult my intelligence by saying it was a typo. You either didn't know the Czech republic is not Czechoslovakia or you thought it was the same thing.

As an eastern European, i find it insulting that you still refer to the Czech and Slovak Republics as "Czechoslovakia". There was a reason why they split up, and if you look in the right place, i'm sure you will find what it is.

Like their views on global warming. Man that really gets me up a tree.
But anyway, people dislike things/charachterists about other people. Im sure theres things about people you don't like, such as possibly ignorant ignorant haters :p

I have, I’m afraid, a fairly piss-poor knowledge of European history pre-20th century. Though last year I studied Poland, as well as the Czech Republic. under Communist rule, including reading and watching contemporary books and films.

Watched a lot of the Polish School of films, such as Man of Marble by Andre Wadja. Interesting stuff.

I believe it’s a reference to a speech Bush made in which he named the members of the ‘coalition of the willing’, those nation-states who sent troops to Iraq, but failed to mention Poland.

EDIT>> ah, apparantly I was slightly mistaken, see below.

OK, Chris, I personally recommend the Peleponese in Greece - lots and lots to see if you're into history, friendly people, and good beaches too.

As far as Italy goes, if you want a more "authentic" holiday, go to the south, but if you want to enjoy yourself by going to the pub, chatting up the local girls and going to the beach, no matter how packed it is, then stay up north.

'Fraid I can't tell you much about eastern Europe, haven't been there much, but if I was you, I'd pick up a bit of all of the local languages - especially in Eastern Europe, and if you're going to the south of Italy, some Italian will be very helpful indeed.
