...no, wait, that's Super Mario...

Okay, a spiky-haired kid with a katana slips into a time warp and finds out about an evil bug from space that's going to destroy the future and has to go through time to stop it!

...no, wait, that's Chrono Trigger...

Okay, an Australian with nothing better to do writes a book about a corporate world that eventually becomes the basis for a nation simulator!

...no, wait, that's Max Barry's life...and NationStates...

Damn it, I'm out of ideas...

A human becomes infused with the power to control emotions of other people and thus finds him/herself hunted by monsterous embodiments of universal physical limits.

A dystopian future where internet trolls rule.

The journal of some person who narrates his story from a book view. One that also doubles as a "if anyone is reading this, then it means I have failed" kind of plot event at the end.

A day in the life of a pickled onion.

The demise of a corporate executive into drug fuelled debauchery, where it leads him/her, and a road to recovery.

How about the story of someone who plays on the computer alot, then decides to write a new novel...Something that no-one has ever though of before...In desparation after wracking his brains, he turns to his closest ally - the internet. Finding a forum from his favourite internet game, he asks

I don't see how this idea couldn't lead to an instant classic at least the equal of Brave New World or Johnny Got His Gun.

Some 14 year old girl gets bored and eventually gets her entire town involved in a 5,000-person online bisexual polygamy sect.

I was going to put that in one of my stories, but I felt hat it took away from said story. :(

The main character, an ordinary man from today's world, somehow ends up in the future.

Turns out that in the future, all crime, poverty, wars, disease and general unhappiness has been abolished. At first the main character likes it, but after a while starts to get bored.

At first he can't quite put his finger on it, but then finds out that he gets pleasure and excitement from disturbing the balance by committing some small and insignificant misdemeanor.

As time goes by, he starts breaking the law and morals more and more, with worse offences every time, until at the end he runs around shooting anything that moves with a machine gun. All the while the rest of the people, instead of fighting back and trying to capture and punish him, are trying to understand and help him.

Make a sci-fi tragedy/horror which is a metaphor of the evils and scourges of human society.

Hey StarCraft did it. ;)

Or make a storyline of the subversive groups starting the next US civil war, then make an RTS on it when the book sells.

You could do a story on the Spear of Destiny.

You could also do a what if story on the dam they were going to plug up the med with. Possibly the effects of such a project on the weather and political situations. Called Atlantropa in its first inception.

Er...you see...the last time I saw somebody praise the glories of an online polygomy sect...they were that kind of person...so I just assumed...um...

Here's an idea I had that never really got off the ground, but you might have better luck with it:

The scene: five or six characters (of your choice) walk into a costume shop that mysteriously appeared on the corner overnight, finally moving into an old storefront that, despite being prime real estate, has mysteriously sat unoccupied for decades. There doesn't seem to be anyone there, so they start trying on costumes... and find themselves in a fantasy world in which their costumes help them "fit in" and become characters in the action taking place. To return, they simply need to remove the costume and they appear in the dressing room of the costume shop again. However, things take a few turns for the decidedly worse when one character is given a tattoo, meaning that they can't leave the fantasy world, and another character accidentally brings a character from the fantasy world back to real life with them. This accidental crossing of the worlds causes them to start bleeding into each other, with dramatic consequences...

You could call it "The Costume Drama" or something like that.

All I can think of are storylines with forum members.

I was thinking about a senate that must decide about what to do with an incompotent emperor who is sending the empire into a downward sprial. Creates an easy dramatic setting as you can create factions, betrayles, alliances, etc.
