English rugby team to play in Croke Park tomorrow. Many people rather upset.

You'd think that after almost 90 years since Bloody Sunday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_(1920)) we'd have gotten over it. But noooooooo.

There are some idiots in Ireland who are having kittens over the fact God Save The Queen will be played in Croke Park. Republican political party Sinn Fein are organising a peaceful protest and I wouldn't be suprised of some stupid people tried to start some trouble.

I'm embarrassed to come from so petty and childish a country. :(

Yeah, sorry, nothing constructive to add but feeling like posting anyway. At least I didn't make it image spam. :/

Maybe we should send some actual armed police/troops instead of the Rugby team and pretend that sports was just cunning plan by the British to subjugate the Irish once more.

Republican Sinn Fein...they'd hold their conference in a phone box, except they couldnt get the wheelchair in. Besides, its about more than bloody Sunday and god save the poxy queen. Its symbolic of hundreds of years of oppression, the systematic destruction of the culture and language etc and so on. You can forgive all you want, but there should be no forgetting. Look whats been done to the kurds, or the Palestinians, or the poles or any oppressed people. Thats what was done to us. It should help us have a spirit of fraternity with our fellow man. Should.

but they were emboldened by what they were able to kick off when the loyalists marched on Dublin.

Interesting they had no objections to GSTQ during the special olympics opening ceremonies.....

And Ifreann 'many' people upset? Hardly

The odds of that many discontented big issue sellers being present are slim. Plus there was really only a small presence of cops at that march...

I'm a proud Irishman living in Massachusetts and i have no problem with England playing at Croke Park, or singing God save the Queen. Of course i don't condone the horrible things the english have done in the past but i'm mature enough to realise it is in the past. I don't blame the current generation of English people for what their ancestors did. Like i hope they don't blame us Irish people for what some of the thingsour ancestors did that were just as bad.

I say let them play, let them sing God save the Queen, and in my opinion anyone who is against it is trying to open up old wounds.

It is a shame, given rugby's history of transcending Ireland's 'troubles'. I'm curious to know what the average member of the crowd thinks of it - I've always found the Irish fans to be a good bunch, even by the generally high standards of rugby fans.

Sinn Fein would organise a protest if they were at vital, ground breaking, last-chance-to-save-civilisation peace talks and found they didn't like the biscuits.

For the record, I predict an Ireland win.

And don't be embarrassed - no country is perfect.

Eh, my Irish dad thinks it's a load of… cobblers… that people are kicking up a noise about it. The civil war ended *calculates* 85 sodding years ago!.

Play.

The paddys and their bloody potato arguments. What about the bombing campaign of the IRA in England.

Well it's like Britain bombing Rome because of slavery. Although I doubt we would get funding from the Americans like those bogtrotters waving their collection tins under the noses of people in Chicago who think they are Irish.

I'm english but I hope Ireland win. The victory would mean alot more to them when it would to us. I'm guessing they would be all yay! this is symbolic of victory over opression with it being the other way round if they lost.

eh?

A lot of the people causing aggro at that orange march were actually just in the area at the time and joined in hence "discontented big issue sellers". Plus the cops had only planned on having to deal with RSF, who again, have a problem assembling something that could be called a small group, let alone a crowd.

"bogtrotters"- very quaint. I presume you've similar titles for Africans, Arabs and others.

The way i see it is, if Ireland dicks England(As i believe they did) it will be all the more sweeter by doing it at Croke park.
I'm not one for booing out national anthems but, if that is a problem just boo it into submission.
Also Queen Elizabeth II wasn't to blame for that incident, now ifi t was God save the Queen it would be a 'problem'.

They did indeed. But the reception at the beginning was very impressive. Anthems sung, rugby played - no trouble that I know of, just the way it should have been.

nothing to do with the powers that be profoundly underestimating the local anger at Wille Frazer and his loyalist paramilitary bunch 'honouring' the man who killed 33 people with a bomp on the street they wanted to march? just 5,000 random big issue sellers happend to be there?

Impressive Irish performance both the team and the crowd.

From the pictures Croke Park creates an brilliant arena for Rugby (from a Scottish point of view would have been a much happier place to be then Murrayfield yesterday!!).

We got bashed to pieces. I think the only English player who really stood out was Strettle. Funny, cos it was his debut.
