There are still posters who think that Muslims are trying to destroy our way of life because they want certain rights, or that the crime of Holocaust Denial is politically driven. Or that Atheists are amoral heathens who want to liberalise children and make them into flaming homosexuals.

I think we should take the time to write down the 'myths' and then debunk them so we have a thread we can refer to for later usage that debunks the myths that surround certain topics.

There are no restrictions on the myths that can be posted. This is an open, honest discussion. If you can't handle the real truth and not the falsehoods and lies you've been fed, then I suggest you find another thread because you will be driven from here.

Care to elaborate? I've only heard that when referring to the most fundamental of the conservative Christians, but not Christians in general.

That's the problem with all these generalizations--you can usually find some faction or group for which it's an accurate description, but the charge is generally made against the group as a whole.

All British people drink tea. Its myth, but a damn shame! Disgusted I was at most of the people at my uni that don't drink tea. How can they ignore such a British pasttime? Infact, how can they call themselves British if their blood isn't made up of 50% tea? :p

Not that a political group is the same as a religious one... but the similarity is in how it's almost seen as "OK" to dismiss/generalize/stereotype/hate a politically-categorized group and not others.

The two I like are "Atheists have no Morality" and the (usually unspoken) "Atheists are ignorant about religion."

The first one makes me laugh. Apparently, because we don't have to fear a nasty afterlife, we don't have to be moral. The thing that really makes me grin is the subtexts:

1: Morality is based on fear.

2: Does that mean you(the speaker) are only moral beacause you're afraid?

The second one just makes me shake my head. While I by no means can quote the bible like a preacher, and have certainly not memorized the Q'ran, I suspect that I know more about Islam, Christianity, Daoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Judaism and Jainist thought than 99% of those who can. Most Atheists have either a strong grounding in a particular religion, or have studied comparative religion. It's in that understanding that many people become Atheists.

Yeah that's a pretty good one. Especially because someone ass-kissing the Mod Squad is the best way to get me firmly opposed to them being a Mod.

These are what we might call 'positive' stereotyping.

Unlike some myths about religion and culture, these ones and others are positive. They take something that seems to be a desirable trait and apply it to that group because they are the only type of people they have met from that group are like that.

They are still myths, but these ones are more overlooked than others because they don't focus on a negative or perceived inadequacy of a certain group.

I'm getting sick of the one that claims all Christians are hypocritical bigots who despise evolution, gravity and any other scientific fact or theory...

On that note I guess I'm pretty annoyed by the myth that guys who like to have the girl on top are submissive and lazy. It's a lot more work to bounce her up and down with only the force of my back muscles than to just jiggle myself around with my arms and legs fully braced.

Tell me about it. I had an 18-month relationship with a very devout Christian evangelist. Total pervert and nigh-on insatiable - I don't know how I survived. [sentence deleted - just a tiny bit more information than you want, I think]
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, that myth is dead and buried. Then dug up again and cremated, just to be sure.

Muslim myths:

Islam is a religion of terrorism/violence.
Islam gives no rights to women.
Islam is an intolerant religion.
All Muslims are terrorists.
There can never be a mix between Islam and the west.

The reality is that terrorism is against what Islam stands for. It was Islam that gave women rights in Arabia and throughout the dark ages. History has shown that Islam has been quite tolerant of other faiths and there can be a mix between Islam and the west.
