Okay, I'm now on our fifth DVD recorder (and third model) in three years. And this one has managed to last six months, which is pretty much a record.
And guess what? I want to watch Platoon, which I know recorded right (I checked a few days ago), stick it on and instead I get 'no recorded titles'. I put it onto the PC, and the same thing happens. Wipe it down for dust, ditto.
So, I thought, while I'm in the mood, I may as well watch Full Metal Jacket instead (a worthy substitute), stick it in, and it plays. That is, plays until it suddenly cuts in with some shitty teen 'comedy' that my sister has decided is more important and thus not worth using the ample supply of blank discs.
Can you ever win with these things?

If your already watching stuff on your PC, you’re better off spending cash on a nice big hard drive. Per Gigabyte, hard drives are now as cheap for storage as DVD’s.

I put a new DVD-RW in my DVR the other day, to record a new episode of my favorite show.......and it did, only it jumped past a really important conversation, and so I don't know what happened. :(
I looked at the disc, there were no scratches, no smudges, no freaking reason for it to do that

I don't think the disc medium is really designed to burn stuff ad hoc like the tape medium is. And why would you burn it from TV anyway?

It's free, and with BBC, you don't get any ads.

I got a DVD just one year ago and I'm still using my VHS more than I use my DVD. For some reason I can't throw out my old trusty VHS because I grew up with it and it didn't break anytime. I got it together with my TV that I now have in my room. It's amazing how those old things can hold in so many years while most of these new thing on the market one has to change after just a couple of years.

Depending on how much rage you generate, it may well do so. Particularily if you get a state of the art blu-ray and hd wins, or vice-versa.

Most DVD media and hardware is wimpy/cheap compared to consumer tape media/hardware.
(I sold most of my CD/DVD media/hardware).. I am skipping the CD/HD/DVD medium altogether.. and transferring my stuff from Tapes to Digital..

I just want a DVD player that works and that I can the films I want for. Years ago it was VHS, Betamax and Phillips. Two very large ones and a small one. The Phillips had better picture quality than the other two, and double sided tapes, which could give you up to 4 hours per side. We had a phillips........there was only one shop in the country that had the tapes...

What you want is a TV Tuner for your PC.

Get a DVD player that is DivX certified, play AVI, MPG, DivX, and probably WMV files.

And a big ass external.

would explain how your sister interrupted your recording.

I'd argue that Video 2000 was actually a better system than Betamax, but hey, nobody even remembers that one anymore. That's the magic of the market place for you.

...you're blaming the fact that you stole intellectual property and can't burn it properly on the DVD itself?
I've had the same two DVD recorders since I got each computer, never once had a problem

Today I wanted to watch an ep of BattleStar G (2006), so I downloaded the entire series to date, beats dvd and vhs recorders.
