Is it just me, or is Jolt getting to be worse than the old server?

I mean, at least the old server actually WORKED most of the time, if slowly.
Jolt, on the other hand, seems to be down half the time, and slow another quarter of the time.
Yeah yeah, theyre swell guys for letting NS stay here, but whats the point if you can hardly access the forums?

Here here. This bloody thing has been up and down all day today. Bloody annoying if you ask me, which you did, thus I respond.

Indeed.
It was alright when it only went down around 8/9 (my time, of course), but now it goes down at random five times a day, it seems, for the last few days.

I think we are seeing some standard issues with distributed databasing ... with the time warps and the down time we are having a database node failure probably or a node communication error (just guessing right now but those are the most likely from what I have seen)

Yeah, the downtime is certainly increasing. I swear it went down 8 times yesterday. The time warping is also a damn problem, because now it warps some posts 5-8 posts back, as opposed to just 1-2 posts back. It's hard to reply to someone when your reply is 8 posts before the post you're replying to.

However, I do find stealing the OP to be very entertaining ;)

It has been getting worse, yes. Thankfully the database errors--for now at least--only strike one of the servers at a time, and you can switch to one of the other two during that time, though of course the others will get hit by one not too long afterwards. It's frustrating, but do we really have any other options? I don't think any of us have the resources to put together some servers for NationStates ourselves.

...though we could always try to garner enough money for such a project...we'd have to collect money from a significant portion of the users...certainly at least some of the RPers over in International Incidents would be interested...

Bah, Max needs to get off his ass and write another book :P
He supposedly owns everything on the forums, so he could just jack some of the writing from II/NS :P

If I had the network I have the computing HP and space for it ... and the experience. But I dont know how likely that is

The question is, would Max even want us to try moving the forums again? He might be happy with the Jolt servers, as shaky as they've been lately.

And hell, who knows? Maybe they'll start improving again and return to the way they had been before: stable and fast.

Well, as I said, we could always go for a serious money drive from all of the NationStates users for buying our own servers and moving the forums there and whatnot. You could try and see if the mods and admins of the NationStates forums would be up to that kind of thing.

If you guys have such a big problem with Jolt, I suggest you host the NS forums all yourself. See how you could handle all the ups and downs of such a system. Unless you are willing to be a part of the solution and help out, then you are other wise noted as being "whiney" :)

Of course we're being whiny. What else would we be if we were discussing this? We all know we probably won't be able to buy new servers for NationStates to be hosted on, so it's all speculative whining and moaning because we're tired of the Jolt errors.

I'd be willing to put up around 35-50 USD towards that fund :).I have been here for like two years now, and I think that independent servers would be fantastic. However, max would have to hire/appt more personnel to make sure that the servers were kept running smoothly. But I think we should ask the Mod/admins and see what they think.

Aye, that we should, though if we're going to ask them, we should try to put together at least a rough draft of a proposal, rather than just suggest the basic idea, as otherwise we look, as you stated, whiny.

As I said in some other thread awhile back, the time warps might be caused by errors in Jolt's server clocks.

Let's take another look at those clocks:

Fantastic, as always. The problem must lie elsewhere...

Heh. Indeed. I'm usually one of the complainers about Jolt being worse than the old servers, but recently, aside from the timewarps, there haven't been any real problems for me.

But it wasnt gone for days EVERY WEEK.
And Jolt eats posts to, possibly more often than the old server. I had to get in the habit of copy/pasting my posts again.

It would probably run better if this was a paid service.

Then they could afford ramdrives for their server, and this thing would truly run like a bolt of lightning.

Jolt hasn't been gone for days lately, sorry. Try to check your ISP or something else.

And Jolt barely eats your posts. The old server ate at least 3 out of 5 posts. When you're a roleplayer and you write really long posts, it's kind of annoying. With Jolt, it happens, but it's the exception and not the rule.

After checking other boards as crowded as Nationstates, I would say the Jolt dudes make a pretty good job for a free server. My only complain goes to the time warp thing, that is disturbing.

Don't expect this to be an invisionfree board with 30 users, although.
