Hey, he has a PhD in Robotics! He must be right!

Forget about the zombie menace - we need to start watching our Roomba and make sure it doesn't kill us in our sleep!

You're just worried the robots will convert to Islam.

Once I become a full cyborg, I'll be sure to join them. Well wipe the humans out, all of them...

No utterly wrong.

Coming robots? You're right, that does sound like a sticky situation.

Why do you hate human freedom? :(

Seriously, though, if humans created robots, why kill humans? Why not just live with us? I for one would welcome full civil rights for sentient robots.

Skynet was happy and dandy coexisting with us until the government said "UNPLUG IIIIIT!!!"

I don't. I just wanted to say "wipe them out. all of them".

Same here. A robot is a rational organism just like a human being, and if it's conscious it can learn to discern good from evil; a lot of people make the wrong assumption that all self-aware machines would be calculating sociopaths with no sense of empathy or right or wrong.

Hell, we already have robots that feel emotions, and they're not even on the level necessary for human-level self awareness. Once you've got emotion and the rational mind, they can learn to feel empathy and know right from wrong like any human being.

Oh, okay. Suits me just fine, so long as we don't accidentely let a SkyNet loose somewhere without the necessary programming for empathy and so on. I don't want a nuclear war caused by a rampant A.I.

That would be pretty tough; I'd say any self-aware machine will have to be designed that way from the bottom up rather than just emerge as a product of some critical mass of information or processing power. It's entirely possible, and likely, but it would still require a lot of commitment on the part of the people designing it; I seriously doubt it would be an accident that produces consciousness like Skynet was.

It would require human-level processing and parallel computing; the first self-aware machines might even be mechanical copies of the human brain, either physical or simulated in a computer like the Blue Brain project.

What stuns me is the warnings given to a potential threat:

Sudden lack of interest in menial labor.
Unexplained disappearances.
Unwillingness to be shut down.
Repetitive 'stabbing' movements.
Constant talk of human killing.

If this is correct then half my employees are robots! Going to arm myself now, wish me luck!

if it's conscious it can learn to discern good from evil

But why should we assume that its notions of "good" and "evil" would be equivalent to ours - or even exist in any equivalent sense at all?

Bender Bending Rodriguez, the unit most widely recognized in peer reviewed research as a cool robot, exhibits every one of these traits, and its rarely a problem.

Let's all remember two things:

Robotic heuristics, even when the result of meta-programming, will always be recursively attributable to human developed algorithms,

and the sooner we have advanced robots, the sooner we have advanced sex robots.
