Like insect eyes, each sensor captures a small, indistinct image, which is then combined into a cohesive whole.

Potential applications could be more convincing teleconferencing technology (it'll seem like the other person is looking directly at you), less obtrusive cameras in cell phones and PDAs, and... *ahem*
