Top Five Favorite Beers

Steel Butterfly

Alright then, folks, here's a "top-5 list" that most everyone will enjoy. Throw up (no pun intended...well...) your top five favorite beers, in order, and then say where you're from, as well as where the beer is.

1. Dos Equis - Mexico
2. Fosters - Australia
3. Moosehead Lager - Canada
4. Stroh's - America
5. Negra Modelo - Mexico

Admitedly a little "name brand-ish," but I'm not quite legal yet, so I'd say it's a damn good list. Also, any list without Coors Light, Natty Light, or American Light is a good one. As from me, I'm American. ;)

Yuengling is pretty good.

Eh...I don't dislike Yuengling. My dad's a big fan. It's just that's what I (literally) grew up drinking...so it's somewhat runofthemill to me. I guess it'd be a "number six."

As for PA, you're correct. :)

None of them are beers - they are all lagers (brewed in very different way to beer)

And Fosters even gives lager a bad name:(

Number six is acceptable.

My five:

Guinness
Yuengling Lager
Magic Hat
Sam Adams (The Lemon one is all I had, but I sure did like it.)
Heineken (I think.. I was pretty drunk by the time I started drinking it.)

As for PA, you're correct. :)

Bah, you just grew up on the wrong side.

The only two I've had a liked was:

Yuengling (Pottstown, PA to be exact)
Coors Original

Other than that it all tastes like rat piss, but I'll still drink it :D

The fat kid at my college kept calling it Pottstown, but whatever, Yuengling is the only good thing to come of Pennsylvannia aside from the Magic Bullet Theory. (kept me laughing for a good while).

Black Cuillin - Isle of Skye Brewery
Sheepshagger Gold - Cairngorm Brewery (yes the name is totally ridiculous, but its a very refreshing pint)
Melbreak Bitter - Loweswater Brewery
Coniston Bluebird - Coniston Brewery
Black Moss Stout - Riverside Brewery

I'm from England, and these (aside from the Stout) are either from the Lake District or Scotland.

Deuchar’s IPA
McEwan’s 80~
Theakston’s Old Peculier
Caledionian 80~
Old Speckled Hen

All are Scottsh heavies, apart from Theakston’s and Speckled Hen, which are both English ales. The above may not be the best ales in the world, but there my choice of drink on a night out. Though I often like to try a heavier ale, such as McEwan’s, Deuchar’s gets the top spot for refreshingness, taste and ease of drinking.

5.Malzmühle (Köln, Germany) Mühlen-Kölsch

plus the Brighella and the Sant'Ambroeus from the microbrewery Birrificio di Lambrate of Milano.

add: I forgot, I'm from Milano.

Plus: It is sacrilege to drink a beer in the wrong glass. Menabrea, Starobrno and Primátor in half-liter glasses. Forst in one-liter ceramic mugs. Kölsch in 20 cl glasses. Pints are for british and irish beers only!

Newcastle brown ale, Guinness, Kilkenny.

I'll drink most other things, but given a choice i'll have one of those. I occasionally buy microbrewery stuff and other imported beers from the local booze-shop, but i've been bitten before and learnt that just because something is expensive, doesn't mean it's any good. :p

For everyday drinking...I drink lagers like Carlton Draught or Cold, because they're cheap.

Czech beer is fantastic, and always makes me chuckle. After the collapse of the communist regimes in the Eastern European Bloc, industries, which had been controlled by the state up to that point, where auctioned off or sold directly to interested parties. However, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the other countries saved a few key industries that they regarded as worthy of special treatment. While Poland and the rest of the countries were safeguarding their manufacturing plants and heavy industries, Czechoslovakia was ensuring their breweries were secure! :p

That's a pretty shitty list. Anyone who thinks Fosters is good hasn't drunk good beer.

Off the top of my head, and in no particular order:

1. Coopers Sparkling Ale
2. Fullers London Pride
3. Pilsner Urquell
4. Piraat Ale
5. Guinness

Not a beer specialist at all. So I doubt I can even get five together.

1. Flensburger Pilsener - Germany
2. Beck's - Germany
3. VB - Australia
4. Tooheys New - Australia
5. XXXX - Australia

Those are the only ones I'll drink when I'm sober. I'll also have Corona, though only when I'm drunk, since it tastes like what I imagine catpiss to be like.

1. An Teallach's Dark Bitter
2. Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout (a local beer)
3. Captain Cook Brewery's Black Porter (another local one)
4. Oyster ale (and another, can't remember who makes it)
5. Guinness / Black Sheep bitter. It depends on the day.

Budvar Dark, Erdinger and San Miguel deserve a mention as my choice of lagers, and failing that, Heineken's alright. As an impoverished student, I have a case of Carling and a few original Guinness's to my left, and I can't help but feel sorry for the Carling's pathetic nature.

Turquoise Days has a great selection... of beers I've never tried... but have at least been within drinking distance of.

Erdinger Dunkel (slightly better than the Weißbier. I won't put both in the list, because there's only five slots) - from Erding, Germany.
Blanche de Bruxelles - perhaps unsurprisingly, from Brussels.
Dog in the Fog - perhaps surprisingly, from Poland.
Trappistes Rochefort 8 (10 is too strong, 6 lacks body) - another Belgian one.
Pendle Witches Brew - from Pendle, Lancashire.

Yay for expensive tastes. :(

Sadly, I haven't been able to find Dog in the Fog in the UK, even with all the Polish speciality shops springing up all over the place.

Guinness can have an honourable mention. It's a decent drink, but now Guinness Marmite has been invented. And it tastes GOOD! :D

Heh, thanks. I tried something from the An Teallach Brewery (I think it was the one called An Teallach) when I was in Inchnadamph. It was absolute crap! I think this was more the Inchnadamph Hotel bar being idiots, more than the beer. I came back the next day and they had a different beer on. Gave it a try and lo and behold it tastes exactly the same! They were clearly fucking around, so I switched to whisky.

Absolutely. Last time we were in there they lit the fire specially, cos we'd just legged it down from Coniston Old Man and were more than a little drenched.

No, it's selling really well over here, even though the brewery now belongs to some Belgium (?) brewing company thing...

The only downside is that while you pay around € 2.50 - 3.- for a sixpack of beer (depending on which brand you chose and where you get it), Beck's is always .50 or 1.- more expensive than anything else.

Other than that it's a very good beer and my favorite. The regular stuff, that is. The "Gold" version "for women" (how I call it) tastes less tart (?). Yuck.

beck's is so much better in germany than it is as an export. i had a tour of the brewery a few years ago and they give you a taste of all their beers at the end, they were all pretty yummy. i think i remember a map there that showed the radius in which they sell their best beer and it was only about 100kms. anything outside of that gets pish.

Many countries produce high quality beers, and people can pick and chose their favourite.

Sudwerk Maerzen -- Sacramento, CA, USA
Quay St. Porter -- Port Huron, MI, USA
Koestritzer Schwarzbier -- Germany
Celebrator Doppelbock -- Aying, Germany
Red Hook Blonde -- Seattle, USA

HONORABLE MENTION:
Blue Moon Belgian White -- Golden, CO, USA Made by a macrobrewer, Coors, but actually very good.
Sierra-Nevada Pale Ale & Celebration Ale -- California, USA

My favorite brew styles are Maerzen (curse my US keyboard's lack of an easy umlaut) and Bock/Doppelbock, but I like a good amber, porter, ale or stout, too.

Red Hook Blonde is simply the best damned refreshing beer I've tried. It is what mass-produced US beers imagine themselves to be. Note to US macrobrewers -- flavor is not a sin.

They're not...unless you count me buying cases and bringing them back to my friends and relatives in Seattle. Between 1990 and 2005, my father lived in Sacramento (south end, in one of those sprawling developments off of Elk Grove or whatever). When I first went to visit him in 1993, he took me to the Sudwerk brewpub in Davis. Between the outstanding beers and the delicious sausages, I was instantly hooked. Their Millennium Bock was easily one of the best beers I've ever had.

I need an excuse to get back there since Dad left. I love that place.

That's worse than Corona Extra, which taste like piss. Budweiser is... there are no words that can describe how horrible it tastes.
It's easy: It doesn't qualify as beer... Neither does Corona.

Like I said before - whoever puts rice or corn into the mix may produce a beverage - but it's not beer. At least not according to the German Purity Law of 1516 which I hold very dear.
beck's is so much better in germany than it is as an export. i had a tour of the brewery a few years ago and they give you a taste of all their beers at the end, they were all pretty yummy. i think i remember a map there that showed the radius in which they sell their best beer and it was only about 100kms. anything outside of that gets pish.
I seriously doubt the part with the 100 clicks delivery span. Unless it's a special, local brew that indeed gets only distributed in the nearby cities, all Beck's beer I ever had got brewed and bottled in the same place - Bremen.

yeh could be. this was a while ago and i'll admit i was a little the worse for wear before i turned up for the tour so the memories are fuzzy at best. perhaps it was simply a psychosomatic effect but i'm sure the standard beck's tasted better in bremen than it does over here. it seems a fairly average pilsner here, but the stuff brewed for the local market was special indeed.

Probably not. At least not the Mexican beer - it usually contains corn, just like the U.S. Budweiser contains rice.

Bah. Some of the crap listed ain't even beer! If it contains rice or corn, it's already bad.

1) Beck's
2) Jever
3) Budvar
4) Flensburger
5) Holsten

There ya go. Now that is beer!

I'd debate Beck's... it's not beer, it's lemonade. Only sweeter.

Beer is considered staple food (?) here. If there's one thing that could make the Germans very angry, it's raising the beer price. Biiig nono! :p

Yup. Taxing beer led to revolutions in the past. And I mean the "burn down the castle" kind of revolutions ;)

DeBeers makes some lovely products ...

But seriously, because beer is a serious topic:

1. Bass Ale
2. Newcastle Brown
3. Old Peculier
4. Stella Artois
5. Hoegarten
That's in no particular order, and the list will change once the warmer weather gets to wear I live. Bass is always on the list, regardless of season, though.

5:I'm gonna say Miller Lite because there commercials kick ass.(There beer tastes like horse piss)
Is that suppose to be Heineken, the Dutch "beer"? Or do they have a Heiniken in America?

The sugar content of that stuff.
I tried it once... no beer should EVER be this sweet. It's even worse than Weizen, and I can hardly bring myself to call even that beer.

Beck's ain't sweet. Warsteiner and Krombacher are, to my taste. But not Beck's.

(And Weizen is a whole different story!)

1 Duvel (Belgium)

in no particular order: Orval, Leffe, Grimbergen, Augustijn, Kasteelbier, Chimay (i won a bottle in a quiz last weekend :)), etc etc (i don't think i ever tasted a beer with a higher alcohol content that i didn't like, i do live in a good country for that :))

i like lighter beers too, but not that much, they are more like fastfood while the above are more like a meal from very expensive restaurant.

Stella Artois (bottled only)

Stella Artois has never really been able to sell itself to me, when I drink it I am reminded of Tonic Water for some absurd reason.

You really need to avoid it draught or canned. It's beautiful in bottles, useless otherwise. And it tastes even better in Belgium (although that may just have been because of the heat when I was there)

it's actually one of my favorite lagers (probably because it's one of the most served in local bars/parties and i'm used to it, together with jupiler), i really don't understand the love for heineken though, it has little to no flavour or alcohol content.

I'm enjoying a Jever now. (6-Pack for € 2.99 plus 48 cents for the deposit, 8 per bottle) :D

[And, like I said somewhere up there, Beck's is more expensive... € 3.79 plus deposit. Meh!]

Prost, y'all!

As from me, I'm American. ;)
Fosters is a joke that Oz exported to the world, noone of sane mind is to consume it or take it seriously.
Moosehead is brilliant, i had one for the first time 4 or 5 years ago and i loved it.

Mine are...
Heineken
Moosehead
DB Draught
Tui
Carona(Nothing beats the taste of hard working Mexicans.)

Hey, I know the Jever! It's from Schleswig-Holstein or some other Land in Norddeutschland, isn't it? I drank it for the first time in Kiel and enjoyed it a lot. Not one of my top five, but way above some other better-known beers. I'd say that Jever has a place in my top twenty.

3:Budweiser(America)

The REAL Budweiser is from the Czech Republic. From the city of Budvar, in german Budweis - hence Budweiser.:)

www.budvar.cz

That's a real beer, not the lousy cheap copy of it also known as "Bud".
