MANCHESTER – A 19-year-old man accidentally killed himself Monday night while playing a game of Russian roulette with a .357 magnum revolver.

Anthony Santiago Cadiz Jr. of Manchester was at the home of a friend at 250 East High St. when he whirled the cylinder on the handgun and pulled the trigger, sending a bullet into his head.

His father, Anthony Santiago Cadiz Sr., said his son had called him an hour earlier to say he wanted to talk to him and would be coming over. He waited, but Anthony never showed. Instead, his father received a telephone call telling him of the shooting.

There were about seven people at the East High Street home when it happened, Cadiz said. His son was playing around with the gun. He had already pulled the trigger once and the gun had not fired.

One of his friends told Anthony to stop and started toward him to take the gun away. Anthony was laughing and smiling as his friend moved toward him and then the gun fired, according to his father.

Cadiz Sr., sitting in his living room, shook his head in disbelief. He and other family members are trying to figure out where Santiago got the gun.

"There are guns all over the streets," said Cadiz, who lived a violent life as a youth growing up in New York City. "That's what I want to know. Where did he get the gun?"

Police, he said, are still investigating that.

Cadiz Jr. was a kid of the violent streets of Springfield, Mass., said his father. He was born in Northhampton, Mass., and raised in Springfield by his mother, Melissa Vasquez.

Cadiz Sr., 40, was an absent father - he spent 17 years in and out of jails and prison. He said he finally straightened out his own life seven years ago and then made it a point to be a part of his son's life.

Cadiz moved to Manchester to get away from the violence, he said. Anthony would come to Manchester each June to spend the summer with him and his family. Cadiz and his wife, Tanya, have seven children between them.

"He was a real good kid," his step-mom said.

Anthony had a great heart and was terrific with his younger step-brother and step-sisters, Cadiz said. He was closest to his 16-year-old brother, Dion Cardoza, who lives in Greenfield, Mass.

His father remembers Anthony as a clown who enjoyed being the center of attention and loved entertaining the family doing back flips off the porch of their Central Street apartment.

He was a great athlete, his father said, who loved playing basketball, baseball and boxing.

When each summer ended, Anthony returned home to Springfield. As the years went by, Cadiz said he began getting calls from Anthony's mother. She couldn't handle him anymore. Anthony had joined a Springfield street gang. Eventually, he dropped out of school.

But about a year ago, Anthony decided to leave behind his life in Springfield and move to Manchester.

Things were OK for a time, but Cadiz said on Christmas Day he and his son had a blow-up. Cadiz Sr. got his son a job, but he lasted only a couple of days. He told his son to leave but, after a couple of weeks, Anthony was back home. Cadiz Sr. said he could not turn his back on his oldest son.

Two weeks ago, Cadiz Sr. said Anthony moved into an apartment with a friend.

"The last couple of weeks he was OK. He was happy, excited. He had his place and then he called me last night and then he's dead," his father said.

Cadiz Sr. said what he needs to do now is "take care of the rest of my children and hopefully they'll learn from this."

Anthony will be buried in Springfield, although funeral arrangements were incomplete yesterday.

There are women who are drawn to stable men whom they believe will provide them with a stable and peaceful home. They most strongly respond to the drive to find a provider as a mate. They would avoid such morons.

There are women who are drawn to daredevils. The unconcious logic is that if a man is brave enough to shoot himself in the head with a flaregun and strong enough to survive, then he will defend her, their children, and their home from threats. They love such morons. As well as the guys who do wheelies on their motorcycles on the highway and who drink themselves unconcious every weekend.
