SAFETY Act of 2007? Bad News?

A bill dubbed "Stopping Adults Facilitating the Exploitation of Today's Youth Act" (SAFETY [One of those bumbling titles created only so they could come up with a snappy acronym...pricks]) was introduced recently by Republican Texas Rep. Lamar Smith. On the exterior, from my own inexperienced eye, it seems like it is mandating that ISPs keep records on all users browsing history, but is also ambiguous enough that it can essentially be wielded at the discression of the Attorney General.

I'm not going to say that it won't get passed due to Constitutional issues, because I won't put ANYTHING past these fuckers...but it seems so ridiculous. I may sound alarmist...hell I may have even read something wrong. Still...kiiiiinda scary.

Oh, and don't give me that "Only pedophiles (read: terrorists) have to worry! Dur!" Crap...I wasn't born yesterday...

I am heavily against this act. It is a serious breach of privacy. If they want to know the internet browsing history of a felon and/or suspected child molester, they need to obtain a warrent, not make a law requiring ISPs to keep track of EVERYONE.

Can your governments stop giving your legislation stupid titles and, you know, call your No Child Left Behind Act an Education Act like the rest of the human race, for example?

No. The idea is to sell such things to the American populace in a way that makes them sound like they actually do something good, hence the USA PATRIOT Act, for instance.

EVIL PROPOSAL SNIP

That be bad.

The Internet does not belong to the US. They really need to realize that.

It's just an excuse to give Congressmen easier access to pr0n.

I know. It just kinds of irritates me, although it in no way effects me.

Irritates you? You're not the one living in the country, voting for the candidate who opposes one of the ones that do this kind of thing only to see the candidate who does this kind of thing get elected. Again.

That would be after the fact, but yeah...I doubt anyone would want to look back on 4chan's history...*shudders*

Even if it goes through you'll never be told if the President has pictures of a fat guy in a tarzan outfit having chestnuts poked up his arse by an orangutan on his computer. Or if Dr (oh fuck no) Rice has been searcing for pictures of Rosie O'Donnel in compromising positions. Its just pervy old joe public who will be castrated by some bull necked spic in the exercise yard with a sharpened spoon.

Wha? O_o

TIME WARP!!! XD

With the people on the Internet? Those poor bastards. Hell, even my history will fuck them up, since I come across goatse every couple of months. I'm largely desensitised to it now.

 indeed. I just have a dislike of deceptive politicians in general. They're like Starlings: an international annoyance.

Oh, and since your location is in Colorado, and judging from your attitude, you live in the fiefdom of Tom Tancredo?

More on the possibility of passing: The House now has an assload of Democrats...does the bill have a nil chance? Or are there enough fuckheads in Washington to pass it?

Addendum: Ugh...Bolol needs to worry less about the world...worry more about intestinal issues...Stress = bad.

As if we don't already have spyware on our computers that is doing the same thing anyway...

But we shouldn't make it easy for these people. Isn't there a reason one has to get a warrant? Keep your hands off my search history, there are things no one should ever see... ;)

in order to permit compliance with court orders that may require production of such information.

So it doesn't seem as if they're making the ISPs turn over all this information to the government - just to store them in case there's a court order to turn them over with regard to specific individuals.

If this passes, someone should organise a protest that involves visiting shock sites.

You've spent a year here and have 4000 posts... isn't that sufficient?

I suppose it would be...though we should really count my old PIcaRDMPCia account as well if we're going to do that...neat.

I personally wouldn't consider myself a veteran until people can mention my name and everyone else will say with perfect understanding "Oooohhh...THAT fucker."

Not necessarily THAT particular understanding...but yeah, to a degree.

Ach! Good memory comrade!

Y'see...I forget things a week after saying them...until my memory be jogged!
